A Very Happy New Year!

Adele, 3 Tree

CHINATOWN, NYC, 7.8.2016

The following profile on Adele, the cover story, comes from the Time issue "The Year Ahead" 2015/2016.

Adele Is Music’s Past, Present and Future, by Sam Lansky, Time, December 28, 2015 - January 4, 2016

Thunder and shock

'Prognosticators anticipated that 25 might sell a million copies in its first week, an extraordinary figure in an anemic music industry that has seen physical record sales wither. Selling 2 million units would be miraculous…. But by the first week’s end, Adele had sold 3.38 million copies of 25, making it the biggest sales week in history. Then sales passed another million the following week. Then another...Adele can’t account for how she pulled off the seemingly impossible. Reclined on the floor of her hotel room a few days after the concert, she says she has “no idea” why she’s sold so many records. “It’s a bit ridiculous…” … The lead single on 25, “Hello,” also shattered records: its music video was viewed at a rate of 1.6 million times per hour on YouTube.'

“… shattered records …”: No idea? While we must begin with her extraordinary talent, and the success and fame she had already achieved, energetically two things were happening to build on this. The first concerns the simple expression of her inherent 3 Tree nature. The 3 Tree I Ching trigram, “Thunder”, images a powerful force and sound, which shakes the earth and thus, draws our attention. In classical commentaries, shock is often used to describe its energy. It corresponds in nature, with the moment when a plant is trying to break through the earth (darkness), and into the light. Once it sees light it grows rapidly. Her fans haven’t heard from or seen her for the past few years, so a new record is bound to attract an already huge, receptive audience. Secondly, 3 Tree is an initiating energy; its most powerful effect is at the beginning, imaged by this yang force trying to break through the earth. With this understanding we can understand its influence as disruptive or “shattering”, especially concerning early sales. In addition, 2015 was a 3 Tree year in Nine Star Ki, meaning the number 3 occupied the center position in the Magic Square associated with it. It suggests those born in a 3 Tree year would in some way take a central position this year; “all eyes” (and ears in Adele’s case) would be on them this year.

A tree grows / A tree has roots

'In a stunted pop economy in which her contemporaries try to sound simultaneously like each other and like what might be trending next, Adele does the opposite: she sounds like the past ...’

“… a stunted pop economy …”: It is uncanny how often the writer of a profile employs imagery that corresponds with the Energy of the person being profiled. Most often “stunted” describes growth or development issues in different aspects of life. Since, quite simply, a tree grows, I maintain that usually, growth problems correspond with Tree. Therefore, we are talking about a Tree problem, in terms of Adele in contrast with her contemporaries, regarding the state of popular music today; it’s not developing (growing) properly. It’s like an overcrowded forest of human planted trees, all of the same type, unable to branch out (to express individuality), and struggling to be seen (for light).  “… she sounds like the past …”: A tree has roots, and the roots feed energy all the way to the most recent growth areas of a tree; the roots of her sound, early influences, appear in the present. Original Rolling Stones members, Brian Jones (2.28.1942, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire – 7.3.1969), 4 Tree, and Mick Jagger (b. 7.26.1943, Dartford, Kent), and Keith Richards (b. 12.18.1943, Dartford, Kent), 3 Tree, were strongly influenced by (had their roots in) the blues.

A stately tree

‘Her music is dignified, even stately, cutting across demographics.’

“… dignified, even stately …”: We speak of a stately tree, tall, well established, majestic, qualities that come with age, qualities we can connect with the next observation.

The soul of a tree

‘Pop’s oldest soul returns to the spotlight’

‘On 25, as on her previous releases, she cements her reputation as pop’s oldest soul with songs that are intimate and simple.’

“… pop’s oldest soul …”:  For me, these quotes brought to mind the book “The Soul of a Tree”, by master woodworker, George Nakashima. According to classical Chinese medicine (CCM for brevity), the soul corresponds, in part, with Tree. To me, an “old soul” suggests a wise person, a person who has been through a lot, yet managed to survive, and in the process, acquired a mature level of understanding of life. It seems to repeat the image of an old tree, one that has managed to “weather many a storm”; grand, immovable, peaceful, protective. Not surprisingly in this light, Aretha Franklin (b. 3.25.1942, Memphis, TN), known as the Queen of Soul, was also born in a Tree year, a 4 Tree year.

A tree has rings which tell its age

‘In person, Adele is frank and funny, peppering her speech with profanity and self-deprecating asides. Perhaps that’s why it’s startling to register how young she still is. 25, like the two albums before, is named for the age she was when she recorded it.’

“… it’s startling to register how young she still is. …”: From my research, age issues of all kinds, arise often in Tree people profiles, much more than in the profiles of those born in any other Energetic year. “… 25, like the two albums before, is named for the age she was when she recorded it.”: A tree distinctly records its age from year to year as we see in its rings. It’s an interesting point to me. Does it suggest that Tree people are especially in tune with, or conscious of the aging process? For me, more research is needed, but this observation is an interesting starting point.

A tree occupies one place

‘Superstardom came the following year when she released another single, “Rolling in the Deep,” a stomping anthem that set the tone for the record that followed and topped charts around the world.’

“… a stomping anthem …”: Since a tree occupies one place, and stomping repeats force on basically one place, and since the Tree energy channels, liver and gallbladder, flow along the legs, we might say that stomping corresponds with Tree; an expression of Tree, a way of releasing pent up Tree energy. In addition, the 3 Tree trigram, ☳, traditionally corresponds with the feet.

At limb's length

‘After giving birth, she did the most radical thing an artist at her level could do: she went mostly dark to spend time with her boyfriend, charity executive Simon Konecki, and their son Angelo. “I was very conscious to make sure that our bond was strong and unbreakable,” she says. “I had to get to that point before I’d come back.”’

“… went mostly dark … spend time with her boyfriend, …  and their son Angelo. … make sure that our bond was strong and unbreakable, ... before I’d come back.”: For a 3 Tree person, it’s like an image of retreating back into the earth. In a number of Tree people profiles (Jimmy Carter, Cate Blanchett, Sean Penn, Jacques Verges, and Huguette Clark) issues of elusiveness or reclusiveness have arisen; they seem to disappear for a period. Adele gives us a reason why this may occur. In classical Chinese medicine, the eyes correspond with the liver, and the gallbladder channels begin at the outside corner of the eyes. Thus, in addition to protecting oneself in a way, one may step back to gain a different perspective on things, “seeing the forest, not just the trees”, or in a 3 Tree case, wanting to see things totally fresh, as if for the first time.

The overall growth of a tree is slow and steady

‘This is important to her: the ability to make her own decisions and work at her own pace. She could have released 25 earlier to make it eligible for the 2016 Grammys, but instead it arrived when she was ready.’

“… work at her own pace … arrived when she was ready …”: 3 Tree people may tend toward impulsiveness, but considering the overall lifespan of a tree, patience corresponds with Tree in CCM.

Review: Adele Holds Firm on ‘25,’ Even as Pop Shifts, by Jon Caramanica, The New York Times, November 18, 2015

Like the rings of a tree

'Pop moves and mutates, but Adele more or less does not. Naming her albums for different ages in her life doesn’t indicate radical changes from era to era, but rather reinforces the reassuringly slow march of time. Her music is like time-lapse photography of a busy street: Small parts move, but the structure of the whole picture remains essentially intact.'

"... 'Pop moves and mutates, but Adele more or less does not ...": This quote reinforces the image in the title of this piece, "Adele Holds Firm on '25' …” - a tree grows in one place from which it does not move. "... Naming her albums for different ages in her life … reinforces the reassuringly slow march of time ...": A beautiful quote to me. We count the rings of a tree to tell of its age, but they add on gradually; annually. "... Small parts move, but the structure of the whole picture remains essentially intact ...": To me, this quote could easily be describing the slow growth of a tree.

Adele Cries to Her Music, Too, by Jon Pareles, The New York Times, November 12, 2015

The rings of a tree are connected

‘“Hello” doesn’t just introduce “25”; in many ways, it sums up the album. On “25,” the rage and heartache of “21” are replaced by longing: for connection, for youth, for reconciliation and for lifelong bonds. Like other songs on the album, “Hello” is filled with thoughts of distance and the irrevocable passage of time, of apologies and coming to terms with the past.’

“… longing: for connection, for youth, for reconciliation and for lifelong bondsthoughts of distance … the irrevocable passage of time … of apologiescoming to terms with the past.’

To me this quote suggests how much she is still connected with the past, and in a Tree profile we can explain this in terms of a tree’s rings. Rings show a record of the tree’s history; when there was a drought, or a fire for example. The rings are also connected, and thus we can see, how the past directly influences the present, and future growth. In terms of healing it highlights to me the importance of the health condition of the Tree related organs, the liver and gallbladder. Often, by healing these organs, mental problems such as those mentioned can be reduced. A classic example is anger, the Tree related negative emotion, that can clearly be reduced, and even eliminated, by changing one’s eating/drinking habits.

At limb’s length 2 / Getting back to one’s roots

‘“Everyone thinks I just disappeared, and I didn’t,” she said. “I just went back to real life, because I had to write an album about real life, because otherwise how can you be relatable? If I wrote about being famous — that’s [expletive] boring.”’

“… Everyone thinks I just disappeared, and I didn’t,” …”: This point sheds further light on an observation already discussed in the first profile.

Adele: Inside Her Private Life and Triumphant Return, by Brian Hiatt, Rolling Stone, November 3, 2015

At limb’s length 3

‘"My career's not my life," she says. "It's my hobby." She wants to be able to release her albums, live in public for a while, and then return to her private existence — for years at a time, maybe, so she can live enough to write the next set of songs. "I think she'll make 20 records," says her manager, Jonathan Dickins. "We're playing for the long game."’

“… live in public for a while, and then return to her private existence …”: This quote sheds even further light on an observation discussed twice before.

Thunder, Quaking

‘"It's impossible to question why she's where she is once you sit down with her to write a song," says Jesso. "She was the first introduction I had to somebody who could sing words on the spot that were actually really great." Jesso's manager told him that he could hear Adele's voice from the street outside the house where they were recording, that it was practically shaking its foundations.’

“… he could hear Adele's voice from the street outside the house where they were recording, that it was practically shaking its foundations.”: The 3 Tree I Ching trigram is called “Thunder”; it is also called “quaking”. This quote shows us how Adele expresses this quality through her voice.

A tree grows toward / responds to light: let’s pretend

‘She does understand artists' temptation to create chaos in their lives. "I would have been totally up for that had I not had a kid," she says. "I didn't think I'd settle down. I always loved the drama, you know? Always wanted to be in love but always loved the drama, since I was very young."

The following quote from the above profile, “Adele Cries to Her Music Too”, sheds a little more light on this part of her nature:

‘Adele would not revisit the making of “21” even if she could. “I just used to let myself drown,” she said. “If I was sad, if I was confused — which I would say were the running themes for most of my records so far — I’d just go with it. I’d let myself fall apart, and I’d sit in darkness, and I’d feel sorry for myself, and I wouldn’t accept any help to get out of it, in terms of going out with my friends to cheer me up, or staying busier. No! I loved the drama of it all.”’

“… always loved the drama … I loved the drama of it all”: As I have mentioned many times, from my findings, more Tree people by far, are involved in acting, than of any other Energetic year.

Bob Marley, 1 Water

Bob Marley Comes Alive in This Collection of Interviews With the People Who Knew Him Best, by Toure, The New York Times, July 11, 2017

This profile is from a review of a new book on Marley, by Roger Steffens, called “So Much Things To Say (The Oral History of Bob Marley).

Water flows to the lowest level

In reading numerous Water people profiles, a theme of helping those in need appears. Pope Francis (b. 12.17.1936, Buenos Aires, Argentina) is the most famous example with the emphasis in his teachings, in aiding the poor. Under Angela Merkel’s (b. 7.17.1954, Hamburg, West Germany) leadership, more than one million refugees have been accepted into Germany. The economist Jeffrey Sachs (b. 11.5.1954, Detroit, MI) has done much research in helping end extreme poverty and hunger, especially in Africa, and the economist, Esther Duflo (b. 10.25.1972, Paris, France), also. It appears that Marley shares the same spirit:

‘… Marley became a star through years of painstaking work, and when he got money he was exceedingly generous, a one-man welfare department. “There were people who would be on a regular thing,” says his former business manager Colin Leslie. “They come every month, in the understanding they were getting the money. … I had to make sure there was a float of funds to make sure that people would be fed. There were those who depended on hot meals from Bob.” Some say Marley supported 4,000 people, but Leslie thinks it was more.’

‘Someone who appears to speak for the people. It’s in his music, his life story, his worldview and the way he carries himself — he seems like an extension of the people and their leader. His music does not come across as a commercial gesture because it’s as if he’s on the public stage to speak for his constituents and give voice to their feelings and their needs. He seems like a sort of Cultural Senator, a man who represents his people — who vote for him with their dollars and their love. No music star in the Western world has ever been a more powerful Cultural Senator on the global stage than Nesta Robert Marley.’

‘As the New York Times pop music critic Jon Pareles once wrote: “Bob Marley became the voice of third-world pain and resistance, the sufferer in the concrete jungle who would not be denied forever. Outsiders everywhere heard Marley as their own champion.” When fans see you as their champion, you become an important part of their lives.’

These quotes on Marley remind me of the first few lines of chapter 8 of the Daodejing:

A man of the superior type resembles water,

Whose goodness lies in benefiting all things without contention,

And staying in places detested by the masses.

This makes him closely akin to Tao.

The goodness of his abode is its low location.

The goodness of his heart is its cavern-like hollowness.

Benevolence is the goodness of his offerings.

Sincerity is the goodness of his speech.

(Henry Wei translation; The Guiding Light of Lao Tzu)

Water keeps flowing forward

‘In “War” Marley declares war on racism, and you get the sense that he does not mean war in a purely symbolic way. In “Redemption Song” he challenges us to respond to the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X — “How long shall they kill our prophets, while we stand aside and look?” In “Them Belly Full (but We Hungry)” he criticizes the class system in Jamaica. In “Zimbabwe” he calls for liberating Africa’s nations. In “Burnin’ and Lootin’” he refers to violent resistance. Marley was speaking for the downtrodden and urging oppressed people throughout the African diaspora to revolt by any means necessary.’

By any means necessary? In this quote, it would appear to me there is a divergence with the spirit of the Tao, for in the following line of the above quote, by the same translator, it says:

‘The goodness of his rule means peace’.

Marley’s musical legacy appears to be one of peaceful rejoice, but to me, there is a non-violent aspect of Water that converges to a point with Marley’s thoughts on resistance, and it is, that in times of difficulty, like the constant forward flow of water in a river, we respond by continually moving forward, and confront issues. Maintain pressure, but peacefully. The best approach might be to find a way around a problem, and Water consciousness always finds an opening. Or over time, and it sometimes takes a long, long time, water gradually wears away at that which stands in its path, and/or with its gathering power, in this case represented by the power of numbers of followers or supporters, submerges it. One of the criticisms of those who help the needy is, as said in the first quote, people become dependent (“people who would be on a regular thing”). It seems to me this concept applies to the needy too; along with the assistance, ultimately, they have to do all they can personally, to move forward, out of poverty.

Things mix in water

‘Still, young Marley was neglected. “He was like the ugly duckling,” Bunny Wailer remembers. “There were many nights of cold ground for his bed and rock stone for his pillow.” He was also a social outcast. “Whites thought of him as a black child; blacks, critical of mixed-race children, taunted him as ‘the little yellow boy,’” Steffens says. “For Bob, his color seemed to be an impediment wherever he turned, causing him to turn inward, a solitary soul relying on his own inner strengths.”’

“… many nights of cold ground for his bed and rock stone for his pillow …”: He knows poverty, first hand. “… mixed-race children …”: The thought occurred that a mixed race child as a general understanding, carries the energy of Water, since things mix in water, and sadly, in many countries where there is a predominant race, the mixed-race child is considered from a status view, as the lowest, which again corresponds, albeit negatively, with Water. “… causing him to turn inward, a solitary soul relying on his own inner strengths.”: An interesting quote to me, because it highlights a quality of Water we see in the image of the Water I Ching trigram. The outer yin lines suggest a person who is outwardly gentle, however, the inner yang line suggests inner strength, a person with character and guts.

Water’s bounty

‘we learn that Marley’s favorite meal was Irish moss, a form of seaweed.’

“… a form of seaweed.”: His Water nature is energized by food from the sea.

The kidneys store Jing

‘One of Marley’s many girlfriends, Esther Anderson, says the root of “I Shot the Sheriff” lay in their relationship: “It’s about birth control. Bob was always after me to ‘breed’ and have a baby with him. He kept asking me why after I’d been with him for a month already I hadn’t got pregnant yet.

“… Bob was always after me to ‘breed’ and have a baby with him.”: According to classical Chinese medicine, the Water organs, the kidneys, store Jing, the substance which is the source of reproduction, development, and maturation. I have collected a number of examples of those born in a 1 Water year whose life has some connection with sex and reproduction. In regards the sexual abuse in the Catholic church, Pope John Paul 11 (5.18.1920, Wadowice, Poland – 4.2.2005), 8 Soil, tended, like a negative expression of Soil, to cover over things, by not confronting this issue. However, he was followed by two popes born in a 1 Water year; Pope Benedict XV1 (b. 4.16.1927, Marktl, Germany), and Pope Francis. I’m suggesting that energetically speaking they came along at this time to resolve this most serious problem. Sandra Fluke (b. 4.17.1981, Saxton, PA), 1 Water, gained national attention regarding political issues pertaining to medical insurance coverage of birth control, and politician, Wendy Davis (b. 5.16.1963), also 1 Water, gained national attention when she held an eleven-hour-long filibuster (which must have seriously tested her own bladder energy) “to block Senate Bill 5, a measure which included more restrictive abortion regulations for Texas” (Wikipedia). Bob’s response seems to simply highlight this inherent quality of Water, that transmits in us, this universal desire to reproduce.

Roger Federer, 1 Water

(b. 8.8.1981, Basel, Switzerland): Currently ranked world No. 3 in men’s singles tennis by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) … won 19 Grand Slam singles titles, the most in history for a male tennis player … held the world No. 1 spot in the ATP rankings for a record total of 302 weeks and was ranked No. 1 for a record 237 weeks … won a record eight Wimbledon titles, five Australian Open titles, a record five consecutive US Open titles and one French Open title … … … … … (Wikipedia)”

Federer is in the news after winning his eighth Wimbledon and 19th career Grand Slam title. I would like to begin with a profile from the past.

Federer as Religious Experience, by David Foster Wallace, The New York Times Magazine, August 20, 2006

Water always finds an opening / Water has a destination

'Federer is able to see, or create, gaps and angles for winners that no one else can envision, and television’s perspective is perfect for viewing and reviewing these Federer Moments. What’s harder to appreciate on TV is that these spectacular-looking angles and winners are not coming from nowhere — they’re often set up several shots ahead, and depend as much on Federer’s manipulation of opponents’ positions as they do on the pace or placement of the coup de grâce.’

'It’s a spectacular winner, a Federer Moment; but watching it live, you can see that it’s also a winner that Federer started setting up four or even five shots earlier. Everything after that first down-the-line slice was designed by the Swiss to maneuver Nadal and lull him and then disrupt his rhythm and balance and open up that last, unimaginable angle…’

“… able to see, or create, gaps and angles for winners that no one else can envision: Water always finds an opening. “… these spectacular-looking angles and winners are not coming from nowhere — they’re often set up several shots ahead … it’s also a winner that Federer started setting up four or even five shots earlier.”: These quotes remind me of quotes on Michelle Obama (see 17.2) who was also born in a 1 Water year. I maintain that water metaphors that help us to understand and describe 1 Water character and personality can best be derived from observations of a river. What is relevant in this regard in Federer’s case is that water in a river has a destination, the ocean, one that is intrinsic to the nature of water. It suggests to me that the 1 Water person in touch with his/her innate nature will have, most likely unconsciously, an idea of destination in whatever he/she sets out to do, and how to arrive at it.

Water imagery

‘In 2005, he auctioned his racquet from his US Open championship to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina.  At the 2005 Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells, Federer arranged an exhibition involving several top players from the ATP and WTA tour called Rally for Relief. The proceeds went to the victims of the tsunami caused by the2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. In December 2006 he visited Tamil Nadu, one of the areas in India most affected by the tsunami …In January 2011, Federer took part in an exhibition, Rally for Relief, to raise money for the victims of the Queensland floods.’

“… to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina … The proceeds went to the victims of the tsunami … raise money for the victims of the Queensland floods …”: I found it interesting in terms of his Water nature that in his Wikipedia entry, in reference to his charitable organization, “The Roger Federer Foundation”, a number of the causes he became involved in, were concerned with the ravages of water.

Roger Federer: A Tennis Assassin, by Matthew Futterman, WSJ, July 17, 2017

In this match his opponent was Marin Cilic (b. 9.28.1988, Yugoslavia), 3 Tree. Cilic entered the match at a physical disadvantage, since he had a foot blister which was causing pain, worsened by a fall during the match. According to this profile, it also caused in him a psychological disadvantage. I want to try addressing this match from an energetic view, of the interaction between Water (Federer), and Tree (Cilic).

A tree’s roots need to connect with a water source / Wood doesn’t always float on water

In the natural relationship between Water and Tree, a tree seeks out water through its roots; water doesn’t seek out trees. The tree must connect with the water source. It then draws on the water, absorbing its energy, which gives it strength. So, theoretically, a Water competitor will energize a Tree player. Even if the Tree player ultimately loses, he/she should still feel elevated from the match. The 3 Tree I Ching trigram is called Thunder, ☳,a yang solid line is at the base, with two yin broken lines above. In nature, it corresponds with a plant as it first breaks through the earth and into the light; the yang force, the strength, is rising from below. Since a strong rising force is necessary to score in basketball it is not surprising then, to see how two prominent names in basketball today, Jeremy Lin (b. 8.23.1988, Torrance, CA), and Stephen Curry (b. 3.14.1988, Akron, OH), were both born in a 3 Tree year. Thus, it appears this blister was far more significant energetically than one might have thought. A root, his leg, was weakened, and he didn’t have the force to rise up, and draw on Federer’s energy which he could use to his own advantage. Result, he “couldn’t keep his head above water”, he was “sunk”, “dead in the water”: Federer beat him in three straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, 6-4.

Water imagery

‘The Croatian was reduced to tears as his game fell apart in the second set …’

‘Two points later, Cilic double-faulted to lose the set and to put himself in a hole he would never get the chance to dig himself out of.’

“… as his game fell apart …”: The philosopher and Buddhist teacher, Pema Chodron (b. 7.14.1936, NYC [Wikipedia]), 1 Water, has written a number of books, that to me, contain Water imagery in the titles: “The Places That Scare You: A Guide to Fearlessness in Difficult Times”, “Taking The Leap: Freeing Ourselves form Old Habits and Fears”, “The Wisdom of No Escape…”, “Don’t Bite the Hook…”, “Fail, Fail Again, Fail Better…”, and, “When Things Fall Apart”! The latter images to me a state when the stamina and drive, traditional kidney energy qualities (Water), according to classical Chinese medicine, decline to the extent, that we can no longer, “hold it all together”. Thus, theoretically at least, a player with strong kidney energy has the potential to play a long game, and at the least, win by outlasting his/her opponent. “… put himself in a hole he would never get the chance to dig himself out of …”: In a similar way that Wallace in the first profile maintains that Federer sets up a shot several strokes in advance, it appears here, that the result is a classic negative Water experience, that is described in the 29th chapter of the I Ching, called “The Abyss”, or “Pit”. Putting it simply, the opponent is heading for a fall, but not put there by himself. If Federer is in touch with his innate Water nature, which no doubt he would be, then he knows about the abyss, and how to place his opponent in that position.

We cannot always see what is going on below the surface of water / Water in a river only flows forward

‘That is what Federer does. His artistry and his elegant, courtly manner cover up what an efficient killer he is, putting his foot on his opponent’s throats once he has them down.’

‘“It didn’t hurt so much that it was putting me in tears, it was just that I couldn’t do my best,” Cilic said. … He draped a towel over his head and tried to regroup. Federer strutted past him and pushed for the match to re-start. … ever the assassin, Federer finished off Cilic with an ace in just 101 minutes.’

“…  cover up …”: Water’s surface conceals what is going on below. It can hide dangerous animals, and in its forward flow water itself can be dangerous with a fast undercurrent or undertow, that can draw and hold one down. “… putting his foot on his opponent’s throats once he has them down. … Federer strutted past him and pushed for the match to re-start”:  The imagery in the first quote here seems a little exaggerated, however water only flows forward, indifferent to obstacles in its path; water engulfs. “Push” is as classic Water word, again repeating this image of water continually flowing forward.

2017 is a Water year

‘“I’m incredibly surprised,” Federer said of his success in 2017. “You would have laughed at me if I told you I was going to win two Slams this year. I also didn’t believe I was going to win two.”’

In Nine Star Ki, each year has a different energy, and 2017, after February 4th, until February 3rd, next year, is a 1 Water year. It means that the person born in a 1 Water year visits the 5 house, the house in the center, and in this situation, the Water person is aided by the forces of nature to take on some kind of central role.

We Need to Relax Like Roger Federer, by Jason Gay, WSJ, July 20, 2017

‘This past Sunday, Roger Federer won his eighth Wimbledon men’s singles title—his first in five years. Weeks away from turning a sports-ancient 36, the Swiss legend is playing some of the best tennis of his life, and a big reason appears to be rest. … an injured and exhausted Federer took six months off at the end of 2016, only to show up this January in Melbourne fresh as a daisy, and win the Australian Open. Then Federer turned right around after Oz and skipped the entire clay court season and the French Open—but returned for Wimbledon and rolled to another Slam title.’

‘The sports science appears increasingly clear: rest may be nature’s finest performance-enhancing drug, restorative both physically and mentally. Smart teams are routinely resting key players in the NBA.’

‘Sports are catching up to what workplace productivity experts have known for ages: time off is good for everybody. Rested employees are consistently better employees, with higher performances and morale. Non-rested employees are...a grumpy disaster waiting to happen.’

“… playing some of the best tennis of his life, and a big reason appears to be rest. … rest may be nature’s finest performance-enhancing drug. … Rested employees are consistently better employees, with higher performances and morale”: This point is most significant, especially in terms of Water. The fundamental image to understand Water energy is of water in a river. In this image, water continually flows until it comes to rest in the ocean: movement ends in rest. In Five Transformations theory, Water takes the lowest point in the cyclical flow of energy, and in terms of correspondences, it aligns with winter, and nighttime, times of rest. When water comes to rest it is flat. Nighttime is the time most appropriate for, and most common as, the time for sleep. We repeat this natural Water imagery by taking the lowest body position and lying flat. Ideally, we should lie “face up”. In this way, the Water related organs, the kidneys, located towards the back of the torso, assume the most restful position, and in a similar way that water flows into the ocean, energy flows into the kidneys, and are restored, energetically speaking, for the next day’s activities.

John Kasich, 3 Tree

(b. 5.13.1952, McKees Rocks, PA): 69th Governor of Ohio, from January 10, 2011 until present. Announced this week he will enter race to become Republican nominee for 2016 presidential election.

John Kasich Joins Crowded 2016 Field, Facing Job of Catch-Up, by Sheryl Gay Stolberg, New York Times, July 21, 2015

A tree's branches extend outward / a tree casts a shadow

' Gov. John R. Kasich, a blunt-spoken and unorthodox Republican who bucked his party by expanding Medicaid under President Obama’s health care law and says politicians must “reach out and help those who live in the shadows,” announced Tuesday that he was joining his party’s long list of candidates for president.'

“... politicians must “reach out and help ...”: I maintain these qualities are common in those born in a Tree year, and reflect the way that Tree energy extends outward through the limbs imaging “helping hands”. “...those who live in the shadows...”: A tree casts a shadow. In different ways shadow imagery appears often in Tree person profiles.

A tree takes time to grow

'Like Mr. McCain, Mr. Kasich is brusque and often combative — even his own aides describe him, euphemistically, as “impatient” — and questions about his temperament have dogged him throughout his career.'

“... “impatient” ...”: A tree’s overall growth pattern is of a slow, steady process, and thus, patience is considered a positive Tree quality in classical Chinese medicine, and impatience as a likely energetic imbalance in the corresponding Tree organs, liver and gallbladder. Since 3 Tree energy corresponds with early spring when the plant first breaks through the earth and into light, we might expect to see impatience more in 3 Tree than 4 Tree profiles.

A fire needs fuel and oxygen to survive

'This is not Mr. Kasich’s first White House bid. He briefly entered the 2000 race, but quickly concluded that he could not compete against George W. Bush, then the governor of Texas, whom he has said “sucked not only all the money, but all the oxygen out of the room.”'

“... “sucked not only all the money, but all the oxygen out of the room” ...”: George W. Bush (b. 7.6.1946, New Haven, CT) was born in a 9 Fire year. Fire needs both fuel (in this case money), and oxygen to exist. In addition, Bush, due to his family history and power, constituted what we could call “big Fire”, and as such, Kasich could not compete.

Kurt Cobain, 6 Metal ☰

(2.20.1967, Aberdeen, WA – 4.5.1994): American musician, artist, songwriter, guitarist, and poet … formed the band Nirvana, seminal in the history of rock music. (Wikipedia)

Before proceeding further, we should keep in mind that rock music is electric music, meaning Metal music, and that “grunge”, the style of music Cobain was associated with and an originator of, has in the word “grunge” a sense of heaviness, that at least partially be associated with Metal. There is also a Soil quality.

Metal cuts

‘When Cobain was nine years old, his parents divorced. He later said that the divorce had a profound effect on his life, while his mother noted that his personality changed dramatically; Cobain became defiant and withdrawn.’

‘In the 1998 documentary Kurt and Courtney, filmmaker Nick Broomfield investigated Tom Grant's claim that Cobain was actually murdered.  …  Not that he was murdered, but that there was just a lack of caring for him. I just think that Courtney had moved on, and he was expendable.’

‘During his second year in high school, Cobain began living with his mother in Aberdeen. Two weeks prior to graduation, he dropped out of Aberdeen High School, upon realizing that he did not have enough credits to graduate. His mother gave him a choice: find employment or leave. After one week, Cobain found his clothes and other belongings packed away in boxes. Feeling banished from his own mother's home, Cobain stayed with friends, occasionally sneaking back into his mother's basement. Cobain also claimed that, during periods of homelessness, he lived under a bridge over the Wishkah River an experience that inspired the song “Something in the Way”. However, Nirvana bassist Novoselic later said, "He hung out there, but you couldn't live on those muddy banks, with the tides coming up and down. That was his own revisionism."’

“… parents divorced … became defiant and withdrawn … a lack of caring for him … he was expendable … Feeling banished from his own mother's home”: Separation issues are common in Metal people profiles, especially 6 Metal. It includes feeling alienated, divorced from, as an outsider, lonely, and alone. I think it reflects the way metal in its organic form is actually separated from the earth. The earth could be a metaphor for people in general, while metal with those who in some way find themselves in a position considered “above” the average person. From another perspective, in the 6 Metal I Ching trigram, “Heaven”, we can say that heaven is part of this world, but separate from and above earthly life; the elite, and those considered special in some way.

‘Cobain befriended a homosexual student at school and suffered bullying from heterosexual students who concluded that he was gay. In an interview, he said that he liked being associated with a gay identity because he did not like people, and when they thought he was gay they left him alone. He stated, "I started being really proud of the fact that I was gay even though I wasn't."’

“… he did not like people, and when they thought he was gay they left him alone.”: In the above examples, we see the direct effect of others on him, however, this quote suggests a fundamental sense of separation that is either inherent in his nature, or has been part of it for a long time.

“… That was his own revisionism.”: As I have mentioned before, the prefix “re” appears often in Metal people profiles; renew, restructure, reinvent for example, and I think it connects with the way metal can be melted down and used in a new way. In revisionism, we have another instance.

Of like minds

‘Cobain struggled to reconcile the massive success of Nirvana with his underground roots. He also felt persecuted by the media, comparing himself to Frances Farmer.’

‘Cobain expressed a particular fondness for John Lennon, whom he called his "idol" in his posthumously-released journals.’

“… Frances FarmerJohn Lennon”: Both Farmer (9.19.1913, Seattle, WA – 8.1.1970), and Lennon (10.9.1940, Liverpool, England – 12.8.1980) were born in a 6 Metal year, so it seems fair to think that Cobain resonated on an energetic level with them.

The Metal sense: smell

‘Patrick Suskind’s novel Perfume: The Story of a Murderer inspired Cobain to write the song "Scentless Apprentice" from In Utero. The book is a historical horror novel about a perfumer’s   apprentice born with no body odor of his own but with a highly developed sense of smell, and who attempts to create the "ultimate perfume" by killing virginal women and taking their scent.’

“… Patrick Suskind 's novel Perfume … a highly developed sense of smell, …”: In classical Chinese medicine and philosophy, the sense of smell corresponds with Metal. Interestingly in this regard, Suskind (b. 3.26.1949, Ambach, Bavaria, Germany [Wikipedia]), like Cobain, was born in a 6 Metal year, the inference being that Suskind was in touch with his inherent Metal nature with this interest in scent, and in some fundamentally energetic way, it resonated with Cobain. On a healing level, we might expect that those born in a Metal year manifest this sensitivity to smell negatively, as allergic reactions to certain smells.

The lungs correspond with Metal

‘Throughout most of his life, Cobain suffered from chronic bronchitis …’

'According to The Telegraph, Cobain had depression …’

“… chronic bronchitis depression …”: The lungs and large intestine correspond with Metal in CCM, and should be the strongest organs for someone born in a Metal year. However, in reality, it appears that Metal birth people tend to suffer disproportionately from diseases of these organs; thus chronic bronchitis. Depression is also not uncommon and is often reflected in a posture that suggests weak lungs; a concave chest and rounded shoulders.

Heaven imagery

‘In the intervening decade, Cobain, a small, frail but handsome man in life, has become an abstract Generation X icon, viewed by many as the "last real rock star" [..] a messiah and martyr whose every utterance has been plundered and parsed.’

“… has become an abstract Generation X icon, …”: In the relationship between Heaven and Earth, Heaven represents the part of nature that earth responds to; climate, the seasons, rain, while Earth the myriad things that grow in accord with the “will” of Heaven. In this sense, Heaven stands for the “Creative”, the instigator, the inventor, and in practical terms, the template that the masses follow. Like John Lennon, Cobain’s music has had enormous influence on other musicians and listeners. Just this week, in looking at the “page view statistics” of his Wikipedia entry, it has been visited more than 220,00 times in the past three weeks, even though he died 23 years ago, and this photo of him was taken just last week.

Travis Kalanick, 6 Metal ☰

(b. 8.6.1976, Los Angeles, CA): American computer programmer and businessman. … co-founder of the peer-to-peer file sharing company, Red Swoosh, and the transportation network company, Uber… estimated net worth according to Forbes magazine in 2014, US $6.3 billion. (Wikipedia)

Riding Shotgun With Uber CEO Travis Kalanick, by Adam Lashinsky, Fortune, May 18, 2017

Heaven trigram

Adam Lashinsky’s new book, Wild Ride: Inside Uber’s Quest for World Domination, the author prowls the streets of San Francisco with the startup’s pugnacious CEO and learns how he feeds on adversity.

“… how he feeds on adversity.”: If his inherent 6 Metal nature is strength, confronting adversity is a way of exercising this quality and making it stronger, since strength is needed to deal with it, thus he “feeds” on it, and in the process it becomes a way of getting ahead of the competition.

Boundless sky

‘Uber, the privately held company he runs from his base in San Francisco, has become a global phenomenon in the mere six years since it first began connecting ride-seeking urbanites with drivers via a simple smartphone app. Now operating in 76 countries, Uber booked $20 billion worth of rides worldwide in 2016 and brought in $6.5 billion in revenue. As its business has boomed, the startup’s investors have continued to bet big on Kalanick’s creation. To date the company has raised $17 billion in debt and venture capital, and has been accorded a gargantuan market value of $69 billion.’

“… Uber … has become a global phenomenon …”: First, Uber is the German for “above”, and thus a most appropriate name for a company run by a 6 Metal person, even though Kalanick was not responsible for it. Heaven images the sky, a locus without boundaries. In like manner, a 6 Metal person’s mind may not be limited by earthly restrictions, such as country designations or traditions. We also have in this quote another quality of Metal, the other meaning of the Chinese character for Metal: gold! I would maintain that in discovering our own gold, what is special about us, and processing and refining it, we find the way we create “gold”, our financial wealth.

Metal shapes wood

‘… the ride-hailing startup wasn’t initially his idea—but he is indisputably its central character. Kalanick supplied the critical insight that transformed someone else’s startup idea from merely interesting to undeniably groundbreaking, by hitting on the idea of enabling freelancers rather than hiring drivers and buying cars. And he has been Uber’s iron-fisted, omnipresent chief executive from the time it first gained traction and began expanding beyond San Francisco.’

“… transformed someone else’s startup idea …”: According to Wikipedia, Uber was founded by Canadian businessman and investor, Garrett Camp (b. 10.4.1978, Calgary, Alberta, Canada), who was born in a 4 Tree year. 4 Tree is a rising energy reflecting a tree growing towards light. It suggests someone with a strong imagination and ability to visualize; an “ideas” person. In Five Transformations theory, it is commonly said that “metal chops wood”, that Metal has a controlling influence over Wood (Tree). To me, such a saying implies negativity; the lowly side of wood, as a fuel for a fire. A more positive interpretation to me would be that Metal “shapes” Wood. In this example between Kalanick and Camp, Kalanick combined his strong, materializing energy with the idea (Camp), to realize something that works in this reality. A most successful example of this combination can be seen in the writing partnership of John Lennon (10.9.1940, Liverpool, England – 12.8.1980), 6 Metal, and Paul McCartney (b. 6.18.1942, Liverpool, England), 4 Tree. “… hitting on the idea of enabling freelancers rather than…: The freelancer’s independent streak has something of the nature of 6 Metal's "heaven as outsider" position, and therefore not surprising that a 6 Metal person would think of it. “… Uber’s iron-fisted, omnipresent chief executive …”: To me, we have here, two images we can see in Metal. “Iron-fisted” directly expresses a Metal quality, while “omnipresent” reflects the boundless sky already mentioned.

Wired

‘Kalanick’s timing with Uber was impeccable. The company perfectly exemplifies the attributes of the information-technology industry’s next wave. It is emphatically a mobile-first business; if there had been no iPhone, there would have been no Uber. And it expanded globally almost from its beginning, far earlier than would have been possible in an era when packaged software and clunky computers were the norm.’

“… a mobile-first business [versus clunky computers] … expanded globally…”: To me, this quote highlights the two aspects associated with Metal, and how they come together. In the body, according to CCM, the lungs and large intestine correspond with Metal. In the former in its relation with air, we have the connection of Metal with “Heaven”, and in the latter, a connection with Metal as a physical phenomenon. In this quote, we see how the heavens in the form of global communication, depend quite simply on metal implements to function, and further, in the image of Metal’s contracting energy (this smaller device (yang)), that through speed and reach, makes the world smaller (more contracted: yang).

Heavens above

‘“I think there’s this question out there,” he says, shifting away from general memes to himself. “‘Is he an asshole?’ Since you’ve spent time with me, one of the big questions you’re going to get is, ‘Is he an asshole?’” … Engineer that he is, Kalanick wants to believe there is a scientific answer to the question. I suggest the answer is and always will be in the realm of opinion, not fact. He rejects this.’

“… Engineer that he is, Kalanick wants to believe there is a scientific answer to the question…”: This quote might suggest a problem people could encounter with 6 Metal people; a possible detachment from their emotions since “Heaven” is of this world, but outside and above earthly experience. Incidentally, to me, it is worth noting that Kalanick’s father was also an engineer, a civil engineer, and the engine corresponds with Metal since it is made of metal with the intention of making life easier, lighter, by doing things (much) more quickly, all qualities we could ascribe to Metal.

A tree grows

‘The “asshole” question was answered for good in the eyes of many early in 2017 when a video of Kalanick berating a driver went viral. Kalanick suggested publicly the incident showed his need to “grow up.” But he made this statement having recently entered his fifth decade. Youthfulness alone can no longer explain his behavior.’

“… berating a driver … Kalanick suggested publicly the incident showed his need to “grow up.” … Youthfulness alone can no longer explain his behavior.”: “Berating” according to Merriam-Webster’s 11th Collegiate dictionary is defined as scolding which in turn is defined as “to find fault noisily or angrily … to censure severely or angrily”. Anger, short temper, and expressions of frustration, all correspond with Tree, according to classical Chinese medicine (CCM for brevity). A tree grows, and indeed in the person, the Tree related organ, the liver, can grow back, even if 80% of it has been removed. Other organs may influence growth: Water may supply the nourishment for growth, Fire, the motivation, Soil, the environment, and Metal may shape or destroy growth. However, the actual mechanism of growth corresponds with Tree. Thus, growth issues, physical, mental and/or spiritual, can all reflect the condition of the liver’s health. It is interesting to me that the author equates anger with youthfulness. Youth is a time when we grow quickly (growth spurts), thus Tree energy is especially strong at this time, and if there are not sufficient outlets to express this energy, there is more potential for it to be expressed as anger. So, when we infer that someone is acting in an immature way, and/or, they need to “grow up”, we are most likely identifying a liver energy problem, reflecting in simple terms, a blocked liver. A tree grows toward light. On a mental or spiritual level, it suggests to me that the full discharge of a person’s liver energy requires in the person a clear image of something to develop and grow towards. Physically, most basically, it suggests that the person is probably consuming an excess of animal food and/or dry baked foods such as bread and crackers, and/or excessive salt intake, and a lack of dark green leafy vegetables and/or an overall light sense to the diet, along with excessive alcohol and/or oil, and/or other toxic substances intake.

Heavens above

‘Uber showed it hadn’t lost the appetite to dream big. In late October 2016 its top product executive, Jeff Holden, published a 99-page white paper devoted to Uber’s research into flying cars, of all things. He dubbed the project “Uber Elevate.” The report begins: “Imagine traveling from San Francisco’s Marina to work in downtown San Jose—a drive that would normally occupy the better part of two hours—in only 15 minutes.” It goes on to explain Uber’s vision for a network of cars that take off and land vertically and the infrastructure it would take to build it. … Whatever Uber’s shortcomings, it’s safe to say it literally considers the sky to be the limit.’

“… Uber’s research into flying cars, of all things. He dubbed the project “Uber Elevate.” … the sky to be the limit.”: Here, we have further reinforcement of a connection between 6 Metal and “heaven”. It reminds me of the Japanese architect, Arata Isozaki (b. 7.23.1931, Oita prefecture, Japan [Wikipedia]), also born in a 6 Metal year, who designed cities in the sky (“Cities in the air”, 1960 – ‘63”, and the Qatar National Library, 2003. (“Arata Isozaki”, by Ken Tadashi Oshima, Phaidon)

And Also

Robert F. Kennedy, 3 Tree ☳

(11.20.1925, Brookline, MA – 6.6.1968): American politician and brother to John F. Kennedy, 35th President of the United States, (January, 1961 – November, 1963), who served as junior senator from New York (January 1965 until his assassination).

How the Thug Became a Dove, by Michael O’Donnell, WSJ, June 9, 2017

In this following review of a new book on Kennedy, “The Revolution of Robert Kennedy”, O’Donnell makes a point I think is most significant in terms of 3 Tree energy:

‘While serving as attorney general, Robert Kennedy wore his hair close-cropped in the style of the early 1960s. After a trip to the barber it could almost resemble a crew cut. But after President Kennedy’s assassination, he began growing it out. By the time he became a candidate for president in 1968, he had an unruly mop. Shrieking teenagers mobbed him like a Beatle, and his many enemies found an easy target. “All hair no brains,” read one hostile protester’s sign. Kennedy’s hair grew at the same rate as his radicalism. The more he spoke with fervent vagueness about revolution, the more he had to hand-comb it off his forehead, in the eerily familiar manner of his late brother. … It may seem like a trivial detail, but as John R. Bohrer shows in “The Revolution of Robert Kennedy,” Bobby’s evolving look reflected a persona in flux. With JFK’s death, he no longer stood on anyone’s shoulders. As the 1960s wore on, Kennedy harnessed the most dynamic political force of his generation: the country’s youth. He not only spoke their language and addressed their concerns but looked like them. And he offered that most intoxicating of political aphrodisiacs: authenticity. He was blunt to a fault, and his favorite campaign activity was arguing with college students. To many, his idealistic opportunism was irresistible.’

“… Kennedy harnessed the most dynamic political force of his generation: the country’s youth…”: In the 3 Tree I Ching trigram ☳ called “Thunder”, a strong force described by the unbroken lower line sits below two weak lines, suggesting it is forcing its strength against them. Henry Wei, author of “The Authentic I Ching” also calls it “Quaking”, implying an explosive force. It corresponds with the very beginning of spring as new plants first break through and into the light. It is described in the above profile on Kennedy in terms of his “authenticity” in the sense that it is a primal force, that is, a force not leaving a space for it to be modified, and for the same reason “blunt to a fault”. However, most importantly, energetically speaking, it is a young energy, and from what I see, people born in a 3 Tree year, express a youthfulness in different ways. It may be that they become prominent for some reason at an early age such as Malala Yousafzai (b. 7.12.1997, Mingora, Swat, Pakistan), or they maintain their youthfulness even into their senior years, such as Mick Jagger (b. 7.26.1943, Dartford, Kent, England), and /or, they appeal to young people, like Kennedy did, again, even in their senior years, such as primatologist, Jane Goodall (b. 4.3.1934, London, England).

Obituaries

Glenne Headly, 9 Fire ☲

(3.13.1955, New London, CT – 6.8.2017). American actress; most notable performances in “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” and “Dick Tracy”. (Wikipedia and the following obituary)

Glenne Headly, a Versatile and Scene-Stealing Actress, Dies at 62, by Richard Sandomir, New York Times, June 9, 2017

There are three significant issues we can learn from her obituary. First is from the cause of death, “pulmonary embolism”, a “blockage of the main artery of the lung or one of its branches by a substance that has travelled from elsewhere in the body” (Wikipedia). I have found a far higher incidence of heart and circulatory diseases in those born in a Fire year, the Energy that rules the heart and circulatory system, than in those born in any other of the Energies. It suggests to me that 9 Fire people should pay especially close attention to the health of their heart. Second concerns her early years. From my research there is a far higher than average experience of separation from loved ones in the early years in those born in a 9 Fire year, and Headly is another example. In her Wikipedia entry we are not told details regarding her father’s relationship with her mother, but:

‘Her first years were spent living under the care of her mother in San Francisco and her maternal grandmother in Lansford, Pennsylvania. Early in her elementary school years, she joined her mother, who was then living in Greenwich Village, and grew up having a rich cultural life.’

Third concerns her choice of film roles. According to this obituary:

‘… when she played Tess Truehart in Warren Beatty’s “Dick Tracy,” she took the character’s name literally. “I think ‘Truehart’ suggests to me a very caring and large-hearted woman,” she told The Los Angeles Times, “one that does things because she believes in them, because it’s actually the character’s credo.”’

Since the heart corresponds with Fire in CCM, it seems a most appropriate part for her to play, and further, that she might provide some special insight into the feelings of the heart. I was especially drawn to her use of the word “believes”. In the way she uses it, I think we can see a reason it corresponds with Fire (which we can relate with the expression, “I believe with all my heart”), and thus, so often mentioned in relation to one’s connection with religion, which, since it should elevate our spirits, we can connect with Fire.

Adam West, 9 Fire ☲

(9.19.1928, Walla Walla, WA - 6.9.2017): ‘the classically handsome baritone actor who turned a comic-book superhero into live-action Pop Art in the 1960s television series “Batman” …’ (from the following obituary)

Sad Day for Gotham: Adam West, Who Played Batman, Dies at 88, by Anita Gates, The New York Times, June 10, 2017

A fire can become huge

‘the classically handsome baritone actor who turned a comic-book superhero into live-action Pop Art … the show was such a phenomenon that Mr. West appeared in costume on the cover of Life magazine, the highest tribute to national popularity at the time.’

“… who turned a comic-book superhero into live-action Pop Art …”: Fire rises the highest of the Five Energies. The superhero corresponds with the highpoint of a flame. Since Fire is the most active of the Five Energies, “live-action” is a most appropriate expression of its nature. “Pop” is derived from popular, and since a fire draws attention, popularity can be equated with Fire. “… the show was such a phenomenon …”: Since a fire can become huge, we might expect a close connection. “… the highest tribute to national popularity at the time.”: Already addressed.

Blood corresponds with Fire

‘The cause [of death] was leukemia’

In CCM, blood corresponds with Fire. According to Wikipedia, “The word leukemia, which means "white blood", is derived from the characteristic high white blood cell count that presents in most afflicted patients before treatment.” As I have mentioned before, diseases of the heart and circulatory systems, in my research, occur far more often in those born in a 9 Fire year than in any of the other Energies. West’s case suggests that it may include blood diseases.

The tongue corresponds with Fire

‘In later decades, he did a great deal of voice work, including a spectacularly long run (2000-17) on the animated series “Family Guy” as Mayor Adam West, a politician who might best be described as sadistic, corrupt, vacant, clueless and utterly charming.’

“… he did a great deal of voice work…”: In CCM, the tongue corresponds with Fire; the way that we express ourselves may reflect the health of the heart. Former Senator from Nebraska, and 24th United States Secretary of Defense, Chuck Hagel (b. 10.4.1946, Omaha, NE) who was born in a 9 Fire year expresses himself in a way that would lead one following this line of thought to show concern for his heart:

‘His sentences are too often arrhythmic, breaking in the middle, when what he’s saying takes an unexpected turn that seems to startle him most of all.’(Chuck Hagel’s historic moment, and what it means for a declining presidency, by Charles P. Pierce, Esquire magazine, April 2007)

However, if you follow this blog, you will see the same principle expressed in terms of the use of language in a variety of ways.

Edith Shiffert, 4 Tree ☴

(1.9.1916, Toronto, Canada - March 1, 2017): American poet whose work was profoundly influenced by the half-century she spent in Japan…  author of nearly two dozen volumes of poetry …  also known as a writer on, and translator of, Japanese poetry. (from the following obituary)

Edith Shiffert, a Poet Inspired by Nature and Her Life in Japan, Dies at 101

Considering she was born in a Tree year I found it interesting that a poem on a tree should be included in her obituary, and further that we learn how she created a connection with a tree in the way she wrote about it:

‘In “The Summer Tree,” published in The Christian Science Monitor in 1968, … the first four stanzas employ half- and whole rhymes in alternation. The rhymed lines also shift position from one stanza to the next, creating a feeling of rippling movement that suggests leaves ruffled by the wind’:

Summer Tree (1968)

Since winter ended for this tree, new leaves
filled all the branches, grew, could not restrain
themselves from coming. They will wilt and drop,
be nothing, but for summer they show green.

Light shines all around them. They do not
feel its warmth or shape. They wear the glow
belonging to the season while they grow.
They wear the light, and that is they are.

The rustle and the texture of the leaves,
the way they look, their smell and taste, do not
concern them on their stems and twigs. Each moves
as air moves, and when winter comes it falls.

Grow is not a word to lightly say.
The tree is there. It uses what it is.
Underground the roots expand. In air
branches rise and spread. The tree is there.’

Dorothy Howell Rodham, 9 Fire ☲

(6.4.1919, Chicago, IL - 11.1.2011): American homemaker and mother of First Lady, U.S. Senator, and U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton. (Wikipedia).

An article appeared in Saturday's New York Times ("Hillary Clinton Embraces Her Mother’s Emotional Tale", by Amy Chozick, June 12,2015) on how Dorothy Howell Rodham's life story "is forming the emotional foundation of her daughter's campaign for President, and will be a central theme in her big kickoff speech on Saturday". This article appears to have drawn on Dorothy's Wikipedia entry, so I have decided to refer directly to it.

Wikipedia

The early development of Fire

' the daughter of Edwin John Howell, Jr. (1897–1946), a Chicago firefighter....'Dorothy's childhood has been described as Dickensian. The family lived as boarders in a crowded house. The parents were dysfunctional and unhappy and prone to sometimes violent fights; they moved Dorothy amongst various schools, and paid only sporadic attention to the children before divorcing in 1927. The children were then sent on a train by themselves, unsupervised (Dorothy was eight, Isabelle younger), to live with their paternal grandparents in the Los Angeles suburb of Alhambra, California. The sisters endured harsh and unloving treatment from their grandparents. After Dorothy was caught trick-or-treating during one Halloween, an activity the grandparents forbade, she was confined to her room for an entire year except for attending school, and was not even allowed to eat in the kitchen or play in the yard.'

The above quote describes to me, different aspects of a Fire environment:

"[Her father was] a Chicago firefighter” ...: We might not be surprised if in some way, his job brought out a Fire quality in his personality, and/or, manifested in his offspring, Dorothy. "The family lived as boarders in a crowded house.": Crowds in confined spaces create heat, and activity becomes more noticeable; there is in this a Fire quality, perhaps positively in terms of greater social interaction, and negatively as volatility; confrontations, arguments and so forth. " The parents were dysfunctional and unhappy and prone to sometimes violent fights.": Joy and laughter are considered the natural positive emotions that correspond with Fire inCCM. Joy is an expression of happiness. In this sense happiness corresponds with Fire, and unhappiness, an expression of Fire imbalance of some kind. Violence and fighting clearly express Fire's negative side. " moved Dorothy amongst various schools": Fire is the most active of the Five Energies, and moving Dorothy in this way we might imagine, activated her Fire nature; for better or worse, we are not sure. " ... paid only sporadic attention to the children before divorcing in 1927": Fire depends directly upon its fuel source for survival; no fuel, no fire. The parent is to a child its fuel; the child depends upon the parent for its survival; no parental support, no fuel. No fuel - no fire, meaning no joy, no self-assurance to go out into the world and be able to function confidently. "The children were then sent on a train by themselves, unsupervised (Dorothy was eight, Isabelle younger), to live with their paternal grandparents in the Los Angeles suburb of Alhambra,  California…”: What I have seen in numerous profiles of those born in a 9 Fire year is the loss or separation of the 9 Fire person from loved ones, in their early years, and we see it again in the life of Mrs. Rodham. Such a loss is something we can imagine one feels in the heart, the Fire related organ in CCM. " ... harsh and unloving treatment from their grandparents.": Fire burns and burning causes pain; pain corresponds with Fire. We might imagine that for a child, the pain of harsh treatment caused in the children a negative effect on their heart, and the lack of love left them with an emptiness, that again contributed to a sense of uncertainty in their nature. " ... confined to her room for an entire year ... not even allowed to eat in the kitchen or play in the yard...": Lack of social interaction, the heart is the social organ, associated with expression, of voice and emotions.

The heart corresponds with Fire in classical Chinese medicine

'In her final years, her health began to fail due to heart problems...'

“… heart problems.”: According to Wikipedia, she died of heart problems. As I have seen from reading numerous profiles from an Energetic view, significantly proportionately more 9 Fire people suffer from heart, circulatory and blood disorders, than those born in any other Energetic year.

On Bill Clinton

In light of what we now know about Dorothy, Bill Clinton's biography becomes more significant in terms of his relationship with Hillary, especially, we might imagine in the early years of their relationship when family matters were discussed. Reason, Bill (b. 8.19.1946, Hope, AK) was also born in a 9 Fire year, and he too went through similar experiences to Dorothy. According to his Wikipedia entry:

'His father, William Jefferson Blythe, Jr. (1918–1946), was a traveling salesman who died in an automobile accident three months before Clinton was born. His mother, Virginia Dell (née Cassidy; 1923–1994), traveled to New Orleans to study nursing soon after he was born. She left Clinton in Hope with her parents Eldridge and Edith Cassidy, who owned and ran a small grocery store ... Bill's mother returned from nursing school and married Roger Clinton, Sr....Clinton says he remembers his stepfather as a gambler and an alcoholic who regularly abused his mother and half-brother, Roger Clinton, Jr., to the point where he intervened multiple times with the threat of violence to protect them.'

Ann Romney, 6 Metal ☰

(b. 4.16.1949, Detroit, MI): wife of Mitt Romney, former Presidential hopeful, businessman, and Governor of Massachusetts from 2003 to 2007, making her former First Lady of Massachusetts. (Wikipedia)

Considering she was born in a Metal year and metal is obtained through mining, Mrs. Romney’s family history is interesting, energetically speaking. According to information in her Wikipedia entry, her father, Thomas Roderick Davies (6.2.1915, Wales, UK – 9.8.1992) was born in a 4 Tree year, but his business was Metal. He was born into a Welsh coal mining family and became a self-made industrialist co-founding a maker of heavy equipment for marine use. His father, David Davies, began working in the mines at the age of six according to a Time profile (August 28, 2012), called “The Ascent of Ann Romney”. In this story, in Ann, we see the two extremes of Metal, for on the one hand we see the family background going back to the mines in Wales, as mentioned, but also we see her ascent to a privileged life, a classic 6 Metal situation according to the way I understand 6 Metal energetics. Mrs. Romney is another example of the many women in prominent positions in society, who were born in a 6 Metal year. The following profile interests me because it quite literally describes her Metal nature. I have updated this profile since I first wrote it.

At Romney’s Side, a Determined Running Mate, by Ashley Parker, New York Times, June 15,2012

Images of metal and strength

The 6 Metal I Ching trigram, ☰, is called “Heaven”. It’s three unbroken lines image strength (unbroken lines), and motion/activity (movement without breaks), and indeed these qualities appear in Mrs. Romney:

‘… a Determined Running Mate …’

“… a Determined Running Mate …”: An expression of her strength.

'someone ....... who, friends say, has steel behind the smile.' …  “I think behind the frivolity, between the warm humor, there’s a lot of steel that’s respected by everybody in the campaign because it’s respected by Mitt Romney” … “I consider myself a very strong person, …”’

“… steel behind the smile … a lot of steel … a very strong person …”: Classic Metal images. Further, we see how she expresses this Metal energy:

‘“… a very independent-minded person and someone that just sets my own path and goes my own way,” Mrs. Romney, 63, said. “I don’t worry about what other people think or do.”

“…independent-minded ...”: To depend on others in any way does not fit the image of an unbroken line, but rather a space, and thus a weakness. “… sets my own path and goes my own way don’t worry about what other people think or do …”: These all work in harmony with this consciousness of self-reliance. The thought occurred, that in a mining image, she has a kind of tunnel vision. Further, we see an example of these qualities in action:

'When she had a brief flare-up of her illness right before Super Tuesday, a crucial day of nominating contests, Mrs. Romney kept the health scare a secret and forced herself to continue campaigning. “I knew I had to take a break, and I knew I couldn’t,” she said.'

“… kept the health scare a secret …”: She is self-contained. “… forced herself to continue campaigning …”: Her internal strength; guts. “… I knew I had to take a break, and I knew I couldn’t…”: The energy channel of the Metal related organ, the large intestine, flows across the shoulders. A fundamental image we can think of in this regard is the miner, and the strength needed to carry a heavy sack over his shoulders, an image of a burden. In everyday life however, we can consider it in terms of responsibility; shouldering responsibility.

Metal cuts

'Since then, though, she has become her husband’s chief promoter, willing to plunge into the political fight and prodding him into his current race, even though most of her family was against it. While he was enumerating all the possible hurdles, she recalled, she frustrated him by cutting him off and saying, “No, I’m not going to consider those things because those change every day.”'

“… willing to plunge into the political fight and prodding him into his current race…”: “Plunge” and “prodding” are worth comment. To me, within this context, they both correspond with Water, suggesting strong constitutional kidney energy, which gives her drive and stamina. Plunge of course images jumping into the water and suggests one is ready to mix with others and go with the flow of events, while prodding resembles the pushing nature of a person, that we can see in the forward flow of water in a river, the fundamental image from which we derive Water metaphors. Prods are often made of metal, so there is a Metal image contained here as well; she’s pushing in a Metal-like way. “… While he was enumerating all the possible hurdles … she frustrated him by cutting him off…”: Metal implements cut. 6 Metal is the most positive of all the Energies, and as such, by cutting him off, she is actually cutting out his negative thoughts (a yang process, incorporating her Metal influence to contract the situation to the issues that are most important); to her, in “going for gold”, he wins by staying positive. “… because those change every day…”: When we know that Mitt (b. 3.4.1947, Detroit, MI) was born in an 8 Soil year, this issue becomes more significant. The first consideration is the 8 Soil I Ching trigram called “Mountain”, which in this quote is reflected in the image of “all the possible hurdles”, reason being that Mountain birth energy reflects in the person who often finds him/herself having “an uphill climb” to achieve a goal. Hillary Clinton (b. 10.26.1949, Chicago, IL) who was born in an 8 Soil year comes to mind with the “trudge up the hill” screenshot referring to Hillary, that flashed during President Obama’s correspondent’s dinner last year. Further, if we return to basics, the emotion of worry corresponds with Soil in CCM, and I think we can see the connection when we consider the actions of a farmer, Soil related work, that goes all the way back in Chinese history. Farming is cyclical, and a farmer who knows his/her land knows the possible pitfalls that may arise to prevent a successful harvest: the farmer projects into the future and worries about things that may never happen. In Mitt’s case, Ann is far more positive; she is “above” such thoughts: Heaven (the mindset of Ann) creates the climate, the seasons, and the rain, that Mountain/Earth (Mitt) responds to.

Metal energy moves inward

'While she describes herself as “tough,” her fortitude was tested in 1998 with a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. With the illness came bone-crushing fatigue. So tired that she barely had the energy to form words, she found herself in bed all day because of exhaustion, and depression soon followed… ‘Mrs. Romney largely turned inward. “I wasn’t sharing,” she said. “I wasn’t telling anyone what I was going through.”'

“… describes herself as “tough, … her fortitude was tested”: Within this context, “tough” and “fortitude”, both images of strength, correspond with Metal. “… depression soon followed.”: Her depression was preceded by fatigue to the point of exhaustion. We speak of metal fatigue. In CCM, the Metal organs are the lungs and large intestine. We can refer to both in terms of “collapse”; collapsed lung, collapsed colon (mines collapse too). In this way, we can connect the lungs with depression, which is not uncommon in Metal people profiles, for when Metal energy declines or is very low, in a slumping posture, the chest can become concave, the shoulders rounded; literally, a depression. “… Mrs. Romney largely turned inward. “I wasn’t sharing, … I wasn’t telling anyone …”:  Metal energy moves from the external periphery to an internal point. The emphasis of the energetic flow is toward the self, and in times of trouble, the Metal person seeks for strength and direction, by looking inward.

David Bowie, 9 Fire

(1.8.1947, Brixton, London, England – 1.10.2016)

Spring Street, NYC, 4.29.2016

Spring Street, NYC, 4.29.2016

Were he still alive, Bowie would have turned 70 this week. The following profiles come from obituaries, and reviews in 2013, on a large retrospective of his life, at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. I think there is much to be learnt about Fire from his profile.

David Bowie Dies at 69; He Transcended Music, Art and Fashion, by Jon Pareles, The New York Times, January 11, 2016

Fire takes things to a higher level

‘He Transcended Music, Art and Fashion’

“… Transcended …”: Fire draws the fuel from its source upward, and the bigger the fire, the higher that fuel can manifest.

Fire is always on the move

‘David Bowie, the infinitely changeable, fiercely forward-looking songwriter who taught generations of musicians about the power of drama, images and personas, died on Sunday, two days after his 69th birthday.’

‘If he had an anthem, it was “Changes,” from his 1971 album “Hunky Dory,” which proclaimed: “Turn and face the strange / Ch-ch-changes / Oh look out now you rock and rollers / Pretty soon now you’re gonna get older.”’

“… infinitely changeable … “Changes” …”: Fire is a direct transformation of the fuel it consumes; as the quality of the fuel changes, the fire changes. In this way, it continually changes, and the person who possesses strong Fire energy, manifests this trait. “… fiercely forward-looking songwriter …”: Fire continually seeks energy; since it immediately consumes all available energy, it is always forward looking. Fiercely? Big fire! “… who taught …”: Fire lights the way. Personally speaking, often when I have heard or read something by a 9 Fire person, I feel I learnt something. President Clinton (b. 8.19.1946, Hope, AK) is a good example to me. So is Bill Gates (b. 10.28.1955, Seattle, WA).

Fire transforms

‘Yet throughout Mr. Bowie’s metamorphoses, he was always recognizable. His voice was widely imitated but always his own; his message was that there was always empathy beyond difference. Angst and apocalypse, media and paranoia, distance and yearning were among Mr. Bowie’s lifelong themes. So was a penchant for transgression coupled with a determination to push cult tastes toward the mainstream.’

“… metamorphoses …”: In converting a fuel source into fire, and continually changing according to the character of the fuel, Fire metamorphoses. A book written by the novelist Franz Kafka, (7.3.1883, Prague, Czech Republic – 6.3.1924), who was born in a 9 Fire year helps support this idea.  Entitled "The Metamorphosis”, it was, according to his Wikipedia entry regarded as “one of the seminal works of fiction of the 20th century”. “… his message was that there was always empathy beyond difference …”: Fire arises out of friction, from the interaction of two opposing forces or entities. In human relations, two people come together. They can meet in open or closed ways; attraction or repulsion, in harmony or conflict. On the surface they are different. The quote to me, suggests Bowie saw beyond this, meaning, with a bigger view, what is behind. He saw connection, invisible qualities common to both; he empathized. He saw difference within the context of similarity. He was a uniter, not a divider. “… a penchant for transgression …”: Fire follows the energy. “…push cult tastes toward the mainstream…”: Fire attracts attention. Those who follow and become attached to a Fire person, can as numbers increase, form a cult, but a cult’s size is still limited. From cult to mainstream? Fire wants maximum exposure.

Nothing Remains: David Bowie’s Vision of Love, by Simon Critchley, The New York Times, January 11, 2016

Fire draws energy from the moment / Fire lives in the moment

‘Bowie’s music made me feel alive for the first time’

“… made me feel alive …”: Fire is light, and light awakens. A big fire draws our attention, and it is difficult to ignore it; we become fully awakened, and like the fire as it totally consumes the fuel at its immediate disposal, fully in the moment: fully alive! Such is the influence of a strong Fire nature person.

Fire attracts

‘For the hundreds of thousands of ordinary working-class boys and girls in England in the early 1970s, including me, Bowie incarnated something glamorous, enticing, exciting and mysterious: a world of unknown pleasures and sparkling intelligence. He offered an escape route from the suburban hellholes that we inhabited. Bowie spoke most eloquently to the disaffected, to those who didn’t feel right in their skin, the socially awkward, the alienated. He spoke to the weirdos, the freaks, the outsiders and drew us in to an extraordinary intimacy, although we knew this was total fantasy. But make no mistake, this was a love story.

“… glamorous, enticing, exciting and mysteriousunknown pleasures …”: Fire is beautiful (glamorous), fire “attracts” (enticing), fire’s activity is to many, exciting, and what lies behind fire and where exactly it comes from, can be mysterious, and since fire is not only attractive, but warming if in a controlled state, inviting and quite possibly most pleasurable. “… sparkling intelligence …”: Fire is light, and “sparkling” is a light image; bright and constantly active. Fire rises the highest of the Five Energies; the mind, along with the heart, correspond with Fire in CCMP. 9 Fire people are most often, “bright”, both mentally and emotionally, a pleasure to be with. “… He offered an escape route from the suburban hellholes that we inhabited …”: Fire’s rising energy lifts you up; it takes you to a higher place. “… an extraordinary intimacy … But make no mistake, this was a love story …”: The heart corresponds with Fire in classical Chinese medicine (CCMP for brevity). Since love comes from the heart, love corresponds with Fire. I think it is also worth commenting on the people this quote says he attracted; the disaffected, the alienated, the weirdos, the freaks, and so forth. Not to sound cynical, but the best fuel for a fire is dead wood; in this case, those who starved on a diet of conventional culture. Through their attraction to him, they fueled his fire, and he returned the favor by giving them love in his expression of their energy.

The Fire trigram ☲

‘The word “nothing” peppers and punctuates Bowie’s entire body of work, from the “hold on to nothing” of “After All,” from “The Man Who Sold the World,” through the scintillating, dystopian visions of “Diamond Dogs” and the refrain “We’re nothing and nothing can help us,” from “Heroes” and onward all the way to “Blackstar.” One could base an entire and pretty coherent interpretation of Bowie’s work simply by focusing on that one word, nothing, and tracking its valences through so many of his songs. Nothing is everywhere in Bowie.’

“… Nothing is everywhere in Bowie …”: To me, “nothing”, as it relates to fire, is really interesting, especially when considered in terms of the Fire trigram. In this trigram, the outer lines are yang, and the inner line, yin. In CCMP, yang suggests brightness, activity, and fullness, while yin implies darkness, passivity, and emptiness. Something outwardly bright, whose inner side is “in the dark”, clearly describes fire, where the flames actually conceal the fuel source. However, the source being yin, suggests emptiness. At its core, fire is empty; there is nothing there; fire has nothing to hold onto. In this sense, “nothing” is at the core of Fire. For a fire to exist therefore, it must constantly search for fuel to fill this emptiness. Bowie is describing his inner nature. His audience is his fuel.

Fire transforms / Fire arises from the friction between opposing forces

‘When I listen to Bowie’s songs I hear an extraordinary hope for transformation.’

‘At the core of Bowie’s music and his apparent negativity is a profound yearning for connection and, most of all, for love.’

‘Concealed in Bowie’s often dystopian words is an appeal to utopia, to the possible transformation not just of who we are, but of where we are.’

What his music yearned for and allowed us to imagine were new forms of being together, new intensities of desire and love in keener visions and sharper sounds.’

“… hope for transformation … to the possible transformation …”: In converting a fuel source into fire, a fire transforms. Fire is a transformational energy. “… apparent negativity is a profound yearning for connection and, most of all, for love …”: The “apparent negativity” refers to the yin core of Fire, mentioned above. Yearning, to me, is an expression of the heart, in terms of fire, of connecting with a fuel source, and in “love”, experiencing the highest expression of Fire, since the heart corresponds with Fire in CCMP.“… Concealed in Bowie’s often dystopian words is an appeal to utopia, to the possible transformation not just of who we are, but of where we are …”: This quote, to me, reiterates what I commented on in the observation before the one above regarding the best fuel for a fire being dead wood. Dystopian refers to the down, negative situation so many of us find ourselves in, while utopia reflects the expression of Fire in the songs he sang: Fire takes things to a higher level. “… new forms of being together, new intensities of desire and love …”: New forms of being together? Fire lights the way. We often speak of intense heat; intensity corresponds with Fire, and 9 Fire people can be intense. We speak of our “heart’s desire”; desire like love, corresponds with Fire. “… keener visions and sharper sounds …”: According to Merriam Webster’s 11th Collegiate dictionary, “keener” can be defined as “having a fine edge or point”. Fire rises to a point. In this sense, “keener” along with “sharper”, both describe Fire energy.

Ch-Ch-Ch Changes of David Bowie, by Roslyn Sulcas, The New York Times, March 22, 2013

Fire attracts

'A photograph hangs inconspicuously near the entrance of “David Bowie Is,” a Victoria and Albert Museum exhibition opening on Saturday that has already sold a record number of tickets . It shows the young man who began life as David Jones, seated, in a dark suit and tie, with a leg propped up on his chair, beneath which sits a drum bearing the name of his band, the Kon-rads. One hand grips a saxophone, the other rests delicately against his face, and he looks out at the world with a mesmerizing blend of reserve and come-hither allure.......Bowie on Display The carefully choreographed pose, the angelic face, the calculation of the gaze, suggest much about the teenager who would become the protean figure known as David Bowie. Immediately apparent is his understanding of body language, image and the importance of seduction — elements that have played a vital role in the career of a pop star who was a performance artist before that term was widely used.'

“… already sold a record number of tickets …”: A fire can become huge. Bigness is a common theme in 9 Fire people profiles. “… with a mesmerizing blend of reserve and come-hither allure …”: The Fire relationship between the fire itself and the onlooker is active/passive. A fire can really draw one’s attention, to the extent that one can almost, indeed in some cases, forget oneself. In this sense, a fire can mesmerize. The “come-hither allure”; fire attracts. But “reserve” is interesting. A Fire person might say things that turn others to rage, while he/she hardly loses composure. “…Immediately apparent is his understanding of body language, image and the importance of seduction …”: Seduction is a stronger form of attraction; seduction clearly expresses Fire. “… a pop star who was a performance artist before that term was widely used.”: The expressive nature of Fire clearly aligns with performing. Performance artists Marina Abramovic (b. 11.30.1946, Belgrade, Serbia), and Christopher Burden (4.4.1946, Boston, MA – 5.10.2015), along with endurance artist, David Blaine (b. 4.4.1973, Brooklyn, NY), were all born in a 9 Fire year.

The sudden appearance of fire comes as a surprise

'The idea of an exhibition built around the life and nearly 50-year career of Mr. Bowie is ambitious. How to show the many guises — a new one just provided by the surprise appearance early this month of a new album, “The Next Day” — of a man who throughout his career has relentlessly reinvented his persona and his music with astonishing rapidity and unpredictability? How to make “David Bowie Is” something more than an array of artifacts, from old record covers and photographs to a panoply of costumes and videos? How to suggest the voracious appetite with which Mr. Bowie has both absorbed and anticipated the social and cultural currents of his time?'

There are many Fire related images in this quote:

"... many guises ...": Guise represents external appearance, which is what most concerns us when we gaze at a fire. "... surprise appearance ...": Rub two sticks together, and eventually, from nothing, a flame suddenly appears. Fundamentally, there is something quite extraordinary in this, and we can imagine, if we had never seen it before, it would come as a surprise. Surprise occurrences appear frequently in 9 Fire people profiles, to the extent we could say, it is an inherent quality in their nature, often as things happening spontaneously, or accidentally. “… relentlessly reinvented his persona and his music with astonishing rapidity and unpredictability …”: Fire has force, and as long as it has fuel, it moves forward continuously. In this sense, fire is relentless. The words "astonishing" and "unpredictability" again bring up this image of surprise. As for "rapidity", fire is active; fire moves quickly, rapidly, especially big fire. “… How to suggest the voracious appetite with which Mr. Bowie has both absorbed and anticipated the social and cultural currents of his time? …”: As long as there is fuel, there is fire; fire has a voracious appetite, and in consuming, fire draws out the energy; fire absorbs. Anticipated the…currents of his time? Fire shines its light into the unknown; Fire lights the way.

Fire is now

'The immersive experience that results seems fitting for an artist described in a telephone interview by the author Camille Paglia as “totally in the senses.” Ms. Paglia, who has contributed an essay to the exhibition catalog, delivered a passionate defense of Mr. Bowie as a major artist ........“He is a product of Surrealism, of Dada, of the Modernist arts,” she said. “He is body-based, always completely in the role he is playing. His tremendous physical virtuosity, his understanding of costume and how it is an imaginative projection of your body, is part of the biggest thing about him: he is so deeply emotional. I’m so happy with the return of David Bowie.”'

"... immersive experience ... “totally in the senses” … always completely in the role he is playing …": Fire totally exists in the moment. We see this in the way a fire connects directly by clinging to its fuel source; the conversion from fuel source to flame lies on one continuum. If it is the case, fire is totally immersed in absorbing this energy, and, carrying this idea further to its expression in the person, would be totally immersed in expressing this energy, meaning in this case, being completely in the role he is playing, “totally in the senses”. “… delivered a passionate defense ... I’m so happy with the return of David Bowie …": Bowie’s fire draws out Paglia’s fire: passionate, happy. "... understanding of costume and how it is an imaginative projection of your body ...": Costume clearly corresponds with the flames. Fire clings, in this sense body and costume can be one. Further, we can see how fashion as a broad category might correspond with Fire. "... deeply emotional ...": The emotions correspond with the heart which corresponds with Fire in CCMP.

The Singer Who Fell to Earth, by Simon Reynolds, The New York Times, March 6, 2013

Fire imagery

'On “The Stars (Are Out Tonight).” the new single from David Bowie’s comeback album, “The Next Day,” one line jumps out: “We will never be rid of these stars.” In the video Mr. Bowie and the actress Tilda Swinton play an elderly couple persecuted by a pair of vampiric stars, who stalk them, invade their house and manipulate them like marionettes. But the song itself is less literal. It portrays celebrities as members of an overlord class who “burn you with their radiant smiles” but also as faintly pitiable creatures, jealous of the quiet, grounded lives of ordinary folk. “But I hope they live forever,” Mr. Bowie sings, a nod to the notion of fame as immortality, a compensation for all the damage and delusion that comes with the territory.'

"... persecuted by a pair of vampiric stars ...": The vampire lives off blood, which corresponds with the heart, and consequently with Fire in CCMP. Fire causes pain; the Fire nature in a person can be responsible for persecuting others, and for the other, feeling the pain of persecution. "... “burn you with their radiant smiles” …”: An interesting image to me. Fire is light, and the radiance of a smile, I maintain, dwells in the light that comes from the teeth, suggesting that the display of teeth, in either a happy or angry way, reflects, positively or negatively, the inner Fire in the person. "... the notion of fame as immortality ...": From my research, Fire people express a greater interest in death than those born in any other Energetic year. I think it is connected with the notion that Fire is a direct expression of its fuel source, and that without it, it dies immediately. This thought, subconscious as it may be, leads to notions of impermanence, and the desire for its opposite.

Fire shows the way

'For most of the 21st century Mr. Bowie had disappeared from view, even as the glam theatricality and gender-bending he pioneered was dominating pop through figures like Lady Gaga. Most assumed that he’d effectively retired, physically exhausted after a major heart attack and surgery in 2004, creatively spent after four decades of self-reinvention. But in a brilliantly organized stealth attack he returned without warning in January with the wistful single “Where Are We Now?” the herald for “The Next Day,” which is out on Columbia on Tuesday.

“… Mr. Bowie had disappeared from view, even as the glam theatricality and gender-bending he pioneered was dominating pop through figures like Lady Gaga …”: Fire lights the way. “… physically exhausted after a major heart attack and surgery in 2004 …”: From my research, 9 Fire people are more likely to suffer from heart and circulatory disorders than those born in any other Energetic year. “… in a brilliantly organized stealth attack he returned without warning …”: We have here another example of the surprise nature of Fire, as already explained.

Fire is, to be seen: fame

'With “The Stars,” a superstar’s critique of celebrity culture could be taken as somewhat hypocritical of course. Mr. Bowie has always had an ambivalent attitude toward fame. His biggest American hit of the 1970s, "Fame", was a harrowing dispatch from inside the paranoid bubble of stardom. He’s often returned to the subject, as with his 1999 album “‘Hours ...,’” an exploration of “fame as injury,” in the words of the Bowieologist Nick Stevenson, and the new album’s “(You Will) Set the Earth on Fire,” the sales pitch of a Svengali to a potential protégé. Mr. Bowie’s career has been governed by a bipolar rhythm, alternating between relentless pursuit of the limelight and shattered retreat from it. Now, after his longest musical break ever, this 66-year old Englishman and New York resident is back for what could well be his last blast, the supernova of his stardom.'

“… Fame …”: None of the Energies stand out like Fire; fame clearly corresponds with Fire. Andy Warhol (8.6.1928, Pittsburgh, PA – 2.22.1987), responsible for the notion that in the future, everyone would experience 15 minutes of fame, was born in a 9 Fire year. “… Mr. Bowie’s career has been governed by a bipolar rhythm, alternating between relentless pursuit of the limelight and shattered retreat from it …”: This point is most interesting to me with a lot to explore. For now, the issue is that a fire is created by friction; there are two sides to a fire. Bi-polar disorder was a significant concern to the late Patty Duke’s (12.14.1946, Queens, NY – 3.29.2016), and she was born in a 9 Fire year. It is possible that bi-polar disorder, and here in Bowie’s case, bipolar rhythm, is connected with a person’s Fire nature. “… his last blast …”: Clearly a Fire image.

More on changes

'Yet while Mr. Bowie himself receded for the past decade, the Bowie-esque has been omnipresent…. the 2000s saw the return of artifice and glitter. The things that Mr. Bowie explored to the hilt, alongside his fellow glam rockers like Roxy Music and Alice Cooper, during the early ’70s — over-the-top theatricality and staging, extremist fashion and sexual androgyny — became defining principles of 21st-century pop. Lady Gaga is the most visible of his inheritors, with her freaky costumes and her gender games …. Above all there’s Nicki Minaj, whose guises include the gay male Roman Zolanski and the ultrafeminine cartoon she calls Barbie. While it’s unlikely that Ms. Minaj is directly influenced by Mr. Bowie, the parallels between his serial personas and her constant image changes are clear. As a host on the music channel Fuse put it, “She says she’s just being herself, but who she is changes every day.”

“… artifice and glitter.”: These qualities clearly correspond with the flames. “… whose guises …”: Already discussed. “… serial personas …”: A most interesting image to me reinforcing this idea already mentioned of Fire being connected with metamorphosis. There is also a possible connection here along with the quality of Fire’s clinging nature of “serial”, in terms of repetitive events, such as in serial murder. “… She says she’s just being herself, but who she is changes every day …”: Not surprisingly, Minaj (b. 12.8.1982, Saint James, Trinidad), like Bowie, was born in a 9 Fire year. Again like Bowie, the issue of continual change appears.

Fire is always on the cusp of the new

'Mr. Bowie embraced metamorphosis from the start. In the mid-’60s he hopped through five bands and many styles and looks before connecting with the public around 1969. Once his career took off, the shape shifting took on a new urgency. Popular taste is fickle, but Mr. Bowie circumvented pop’s cruel turnover by turning himself into the New Thing, again and again. As he said in 1977: “My policy has been that as soon as a system or process works, it’s out of date. I move on to another area.” Perhaps the fashion world has so lionized Mr. Bowie (Gucci is a sponsor of the London exhibition) because he has so thoroughly assimilated fashion’s own logic of remorseless supercession.'

"Mr. Bowie embraced metamorphosis from the start ... turning himself into the New Thing, again and again ...": This quality has already been explained above. "... “My policy has been that as soon as a system or process works, it’s out of date. I move on to another area.”": A fire consumes entirely the fuel at its disposal, and continues to move forward in search of more; a fire never goes back. For this reason, it should not be surprising to see that one born in a 9 Fire year might not really think much about the past.

The Fire trigram again ☲

'But there’s more to Mr. Bowie’s compulsive changeability than a career strategy. What he was really developing during the ’70s was a new postmodern psychology based around flux and mutability. His great precursor and influence here was Warhol, the inspiration for his 1971 song “Andy Warhol” and a role Mr. Bowie would actually play in the 1996 biopic “Basquiat.” Analyzing Warhol, the art critic Donald Kuspit wrote of “the protean artist-self with no core” — a description that could also fit Mr. Bowie.'

"... compulsive changeability ...": Already explained. "... His great precursor and influence here was Warhol ...": As already mentioned, Warhol was also born in a 9 Fire year. Often I have seen in studying profiles that a major influence was of the same Energetic nature as the person being profiled. "... Analyzing Warhol, the art critic Donald Kuspit wrote of “the protean artist-self with no core” — a description that could also fit Mr. Bowie ...": Please refer to the section above describing the Fire trigram, and its relationship with “nothing”.

The most important quote in the piece

'But living like a cross between a chameleon and a magpie (Mr. Bowie is a voracious assimilator of influences) has its downsides. Read the vintage interviews, and it’s striking how often intimations of hollowness occur, the sense of a man who outwardly appears superconfident but who battles feelings of self-loathing and doubt. “When I saw a quality in someone that I liked, I used it later as if it were my own”; “I’m not an innovator. I’m really just a Photostat machine. I pour out what has already been fed in.It seems as if “a continuing, returning feeling of inadequacy over what I’ve done” has helped propel the restless remaking of sound and style.'

"... voracious assimilator of influences ...": “Voracious” could mean insatiable which clearly corresponds with Fire, since Fire always wants more, Fire continually consumes. Further, when we think of big fire, we see that it is made up of an infinite number of individual fires that come together (assimilate) to become the one big fire. "... intimations of hollowness ... the sense of a man who outwardly appears superconfident but who battles feelings of self-loathing and doubt ": To me, this quote beautifully describes the qualities described by the Fire trigram, which has already been explained. "... When I saw a quality in someone that I liked, I used it later as if it were my own ...": When you consume something, it becomes part of you. "... I pour out what has already been fed in ...": Beautiful; exactly what a fire does in converting the fuel into flames. "... It seems as if “a continuing, returning feeling of inadequacy over what I’ve done” has helped propel the restless remaking of sound and style ...": Fire continually consumes and in the process, uses up, leading to a state of emptiness, which is filled up as a result of an external expression which attracts attention, to fill up the interior.

No fuel, no fire: a fire is never far away from death

'The Grim Reaper is no stranger to the Bowie songbook. In his Ziggy guise he performed Jacques Brel’s “My Death” and Mr. Bowie’s hit “Ashes to Ashes” derives its title from a burial service. “The Hearts Filthy Lesson,” on “Outside,” addresses “the fact that life is finite,” Mr. Bowie has said. “That realization, when it comes, usually later in life, can either be a really daunting prospect or it makes things a lot clearer.” But judging by “The Next Day,” Mr. Bowie’s close encounter of the near-fatal kind has only muddied things. There is little evidence of serenity or enlightenment. Facing the final curtain the singer seems exposed as rarely before, his uncertainty and disorientation no longer couched in allegory or elegantly stylized...... The climactic song “Heat” pays homage to the existentialist balladry of Scott Walker, who covered “My Death” before Mr. Bowie.'

Death corresponds with Fire.

The Invention of David Bowie, by Ian Buruma, The New York Review of Books, May 23, 2013

Big fire consumes fuel quickly

‘What has been truly unusual about Bowie, in comparison to other rock acts, is the lightning speed of his costume changes, as it were.’

“… lightning speed of his costume changes …”: Fire continually moves forward, seeking new fuel. The bigger the fire, the quicker it consumes fuel, and the faster it moves on to a new fuel source. In Bowie’s case, the costume changes expressed the latest kind of fuel he was consuming.

Fire is an accelerating energy

‘Bowie wanted fame. But it happened so quickly that it almost killed him. He described it in Cracked Actor, a fascinating documentary film made in 1974 for the BBC. Bowie, pale, emaciated, his nose twitching from excessive ingestions of cocaine, tells Alan Yentob, his interviewer, about the terrors of fame. It was like being “in the car when someone’s accelerating very, very fast, and you’re not driving…and you’re not sure whether you like it or not…that’s what success was like.”

“… fame. It was like being “in the car when someone’s accelerating very, very fast, and you’re not driving … and you’re not sure whether you like it or not …”: In the rotation of the Five Energies, Fire corresponds with the stage when things really “take off”. When things enter the Fire stage, everything accelerates. On the one hand there is the excitement of speed and the lightness and relinquishing of the gravitational pull of the earth, but on the other, the danger, that with everything happening so fast, things could end badly. “… you’re not driving …”: He’s describing a situation that worries people about those born in a Fire year, or who possess strong Fire; are they in control? (think Donald Trump at present).  Fire needs to be controlled. However, here we see it from the other side. The Fire person, Bowie, has created a situation that is fast turning out of control, but it is he who is in danger.

Michelle Obama, 1 Water

 (b. 1.17.1964, Chicago, IL): First Lady of the United States.

Michelle Obama and the Evolution of a First Lady, by Jodi Kantor, The New York Times, January 6, 2012

Water in a river only flows forward, from one place to another with an ultimate destination

In the print edition the subheadings read:

'First Lady's Fraught White House Journey to Greater Fulfillment', and 'A Quiet First Lady Forging an Influential Path in Washington'

“… JourneyForging an Influential Path …”: Both the Water I Ching trigram, and the Chinese character for water, image water as flowing in a river, and a river only flows forward, with an ultimate destination. I maintain a river is the primary image from which we can derive Water metaphors. A river may begin high in the mountains as a simple stream, but it will be the most direct way to the sea. Since water repeatedly follows a course established with the shortest route to the sea, we can relate Water with "forging" a path; with people who create a way of doing something, which others can follow. Since water moves from one place to another, with an ultimate destination, we can associate Water with journeys and travel, and, with the idea of destiny. We cannot frame any of the other Energies this way. In this light it is interesting to see that Beyoncé, the lead singer, and creator of the singing group, “Destiny's Child” was born in a 1 Water year (b. 9.4.'81, Houston, TX), as were fellow members, Kelly Rowland (b. 2.11.'81, Atlanta, GA), LaTavia Roberson (b. 11.1.'81, Houston, TX), LeToya Luckett (b. 3.11.'81, Houston, TX), and Farrah Franklin (b. 5.3.'81, Seattle, WA). Now let us see how this works in terms of this profile on Mrs. Obama. On relating to her feelings regarding the way Mr. Obama's staff were doing their jobs, Mr. Obama said of her:

‘“She feels as if our rudder isn’t set right…”’

“… our rudder …”: First, I maintain it is significant he should choose a Water image to describe Michelle since she was born in a 1 Water year. It is further significant as it may tell us something of the inherent abilities of a Water person. I suggest that due to her Water nature, she may have, unconscious perhaps, an image of destination, manifesting as keeping in mind where things are ultimately headed; she has a built in sense for things flowing in the right direction. In this way, she may have an innate understanding regarding the correct path to take to arrive at the destination of success.

There are two other issues to consider regarding the idea of arriving at a destination, destination meaning any goal one sets out to achieve. They are Water’s capacity and force. Is a person’s Water energy sufficient to actually arrive at the hoped for destination, and is the flow strong enough to do so in a timely manner? In the human body, the Water channels, the kidney and bladder, are located predominantly along the back of the torso and legs. According to classical Chinese medicine, they are responsible for our forward movement; our drive, will, get up and go, and stamina. In terms of classical Chinese medicine then, our destiny is tied up with our kidney energy, mostly from what we inherited from our parents, but also including the health condition of the kidney and bladder functions at any point in time.

Water cannot be compressed

Mrs. Obama is a supportive but often anxious spouse, suspicious of conventional political thinking, a groundbreaking figure who has acutely felt the pressures and possibilities of being the first African-American in her position and a first lady who has worked to make her role more meaningful.

“… a supportive but often anxious spouse …”: Water nourishes Tree. Since Michelle was born in a 1 Water year, and Barak (b. 8.4.1961, Honolulu, HI) in a 3 Tree year, her energy flows easily to him. “… a groundbreaking figure …”: This quote repeats the already mentioned “forging a path”. “… acutely felt the pressures …”: Issues regarding pressure appear often in Water people profiles. Either the person being profiled is under pressure, or putting pressure on others. We can experience both, either by pressing into water and seeing it move away from our pressure, and by submerging ourselves in water, and feeling the pressure created by being surrounded by water.

Water is always pressing against the walls of its container

'Initially, she had considered postponing her move to the White House for months; after arriving, she bristled at its confinements and obligations — unable to walk her dog without risking being photographed, and monitored by her husband’s aides for everything from how she decorated the family’s private quarters to whether she took makeup artists on overseas trips.'

‘The confinement of the White House was also a shock; suddenly she was cut off from her old life and rituals… “I don’t think any of us contemplated how isolating this whole experience would be,” Dr. Eric Whitaker, a close friend from Chicago, said in an interview.’

“… confinement …”: She's in a fish bowl. Confinement in some form is pervasive in Water people profiles. If water is always pressing against the walls of its container, it suggests to me Water psychology is of expansion, and it would feel acutely any sense of restriction. Water environments include prisons, hospitals, rehab clinics, ghettos and poverty stricken areas, situations where the person feels constrained in movement.

Water can be soft, and hard

‘She was sometimes harder on her husband’s team than he was, eventually urging him to replace them.’

‘She also thanked him for putting up with how hard she had been on him. At that line, a few of the advisers glanced at each other in recognition.’

“… harder on her husband’s team than he was … how hard she had been on him …”: The Water trigram is yin (soft) on the outside, but yang (hard) in the center. A Water person may appear soft and agreeable, but under pressure, one can be assured of their inner strength and character, and in some instances, this quality manifests as hardness.

Water always finds an opening

‘For all of the first lady’s newness, she was quick to identify problems.’

“… quick to identify problems …”: In finding cracks, Water easily finds weaknesses.

A rising tide lifts all boats

‘The worse things got for her husband in 2011, the more she rallied to his side, buoying him personally and politically.’

“… buoying him …”: This quote is interesting to me since it employs a water image, “buoying”, to describe the kind of support she gave her husband. Wood floats on water. “Rallying to his side” to me resembles an image of a tide coming in. So how did she support him? By throwing a party and attempting to lift his spirits with her toast to him:

‘In August, after the debt ceiling negotiations in Washington reached their painful conclusion, Mrs. Obama gave a party for his 50th birthday, warning guests not to leave early and delivering a stem-winder of a toast in praise of her husband … As the sun faded, the 150 guests — friends, celebrities, officials — sat on the South Lawn, listening to the first lady describe her version of Barack Obama: a tireless, upright leader who rose above Washington games, killed the world’s most wanted terrorist and still managed to coach his daughter Sasha’s basketball team.’

Mick Jagger, 3 Tree ☳

(b. 7.26.1943, Dartmouth, Kent, England)

First, I would like to comment on the photo, from a poster of the cover of issue 1275 (December 1, 2016) of Rolling Stone, which ran a cover story on the Stones and their latest album, Blue and Lonesome. If you look closely you will see single lines running down each side of Jagger’s face from the nose; the “laugh lines”. In his most insightful book, “Face Fortunes”, Peter Shen tells us that these lines indicate a person’s potential for longevity, as well as overall health and vitality. Clearly, on his left side, we see that the line goes all the way to the chin. Such laugh lines are extremely rare and traditionally considered auspicious, and his expression of joy probably suggests the spirit behind their meaning. According to Shen’s descriptions of the different kinds of laugh lines, Jagger’s would be considered “very long, curving down and then out”. He says about the owner of such that “you will be a longevity star, seeing five generations of your descendants”. At 73, Jagger fathered his eighth child in December, has five grandchildren, and one great grandchild. So, should he choose to take good care of himself, he could at least see his great, great grandchild.

Regarding Mick’s 3 Tree energy, there are three things worth considering. First, the 3 Tree I Ching trigram is called “Thunder”. It images a yang line below two yin lines; a strong force rising up below and trying to break through, two weak ones. Thunder can cause the earth to shake. This movement, along with its loud noise, can shock; it is a disruptive energy. To me, it describes rock and roll, whose popularity basically began with Elvis Presley (1.8.1935, Tupelo, MS – 8.16.1977), who was born in a 3 Tree year. Second, in nature, 3 Tree corresponds with early spring (closer to Chinese New Year), when a plant first breaks through the earth and into the light, and in daily life with early morning, from the moment we first open our eyes and arise, through the busy time when most of us prepare for work and school, and travel to such places. It thus corresponds with new beginnings, youth, and pioneers. It is, employing the imagery of a Stones song, a “start me up” energy. 3 Tree people often have early successes (Paul Allen, b. 1.21.1953, Seattle, WA, who cofounded Microsoft but was forced to leave early due to ill health), or become prominent early in life (Malala Yousafzai, b. 7.12.1997, Mingora, Pakistan), yet manage to maintain a youthfulness (Mick), and remain attractive to young people, even in their senior years (primatologist, Jane Goodall, b. 4.3.1934, London, England). Third, Brian Jones (2.28.1942, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England – 7.3.1969) who formed the band was born in a 4 Tree year, and Keith Richards (b.12.18.1943, Dartford, Kent, England) was, like Mick, born in a 3 Tree year, so there has been a strong Tree energy influence in the band from its inception.  Blues, especially Chicago blues, was a strong, early inspiration on the band, and this present album suggests, in a Tree image, a “getting back to one’s roots”, as it is a cover of blues tunes.

Joan Rivers, 4 Tree ☴

(6.8.1933, Brooklyn, NY – 9.4.2014): American comedian, actress, writer, producer, and television host.

Joan Rivers: Bulldozer, by Bari Weiss, WSJ, 12.31.2016

A tree grows in one place

‘Far more fascinating than Rivers’s obsession with the superficial was her exceptional grit, which her inferiority complex about her looks doesn’t come close to explaining. In the late ’50s at a Boston strip club where she’d been hired to perform under the name “Pepper January,” she flopped and was fired before her second set. But even that night, in a hotel room smelling “of urine and peanuts,” she sobbed but knew she couldn’t quit. As she’d later recall: “I was giving birth to a baby and someone had tied my knees.”.…. Her motto was Churchillian: “Never stop believing. Never give up. Never quit. Never!”’

“…Far more fascinating than Rivers’s obsession with the superficial was her exceptional grit … she couldn’t quitNever stop believing. Never give up. Never quit. Never”: A naturally growing tree occupies only one place during its lifetime. For it to survive, it has to endure the hardships nature presents it with. I think there is a strong similarity in this image with the ideas of standing one’s ground, taking a stand, and leaning in against the wind; the notion of grit.

(1.20.1950, Mantua, Italy – 12.22.2016): Editor-in-chief of Vogue Italia, from 1988 until this year (Wikipedia).

Looking at the Vogue magazine Wikipedia entry, I found it interesting that the editors-in-chief of American Vogue, Anna Wintour (b. 11.3.1949, London, England), and of Paris Vogue, Emmanuelle Alt (b. 5.18.1967, Paris, France), were also born in a 6 Metal year. Some prominent women of style; Anna Piaggi (3.22.1931, Milan, Italy – 8.7.2012), Isabella Blow (11.19.1958, London, England – 5.7.2007), Madonna (b. 8.16. 1958, Bay City, MI), and Daphne Guinness (b. 11.9.1967, London, England), were also born in a 6 Metal year. Helen Gurley Brown (2.18.1922, Green Forest, AK – 8.13.2012), former editor of Cosmopolitan, a women’s magazine, was also born in a 6 Metal year.

Franca Sozzani Dies at 66; Gave Italian Vogue a Daring Look and Voice, by Matthew Schneier, December 22, 2016

The 6 Metal I Ching trigram

To understand Sozzani’s profile, some background information on the 6 Metal I Ching trigram is helpful. First, it is called “Heaven”. There are eight “trigrams” (symbols of three lines) from which the 64 hexagrams (symbols of six lines) of the I Ching are constructed. These eight trigrams are considered a family with a father, mother, three sons and three daughters. Heaven represents the father; a symbol of strength, motion and creativity. Heaven initiates and invents. 6 Metal people often possess unique talents, and they establish the templates that transcend boundaries, which the masses follow. In Sozzani’s case, according to this obituary:

“Artists and talent flowed to her, and it wasn’t because she was Italian Vogue but because Italian Vogue was her”

It also helpful to consider in terms of the physical heaven, the sky, and its position of being part of our life but above and outside of earthly existence, with a big view, of being able to see “the whole picture”.

The sky corresponds with 6 Metal

‘…she was a beauty, with Pre-Raphaelite curls and a durable elegance immune to trends...’

“… Pre-Raphaelite curls …”: In the image of heaven, we can assume, and it is the case that more than likely, a 6 Metal woman is going to be strong, even “very” strong, but she may also appear, in the image of heavenly beings, “angelic”, which I think we can relate with many of the images of pre-Raphaelite women.

“… durable elegance immune to trends …”: Durability exemplifies the strength aspect mentioned. Metal is literally refined; it is separated from the earth and finds itself above it. The Chinese character for Metal is the same for “gold”, so in a combination of these images we can see a connection with elegance. “Immunity to trends” is interesting to me. If heaven is located above and therefore outside of earthly existence, it can remain aloof to the trends of daily life.

Metal is strong / the unbroken lines represent continuous movement

“I will never forget the energy of that woman,” said Federico Marchetti, the chief executive of Yoox Net-a-Porter Group…. “Throughout her life and career, including to the end of her life, she continued to do everything.”

I will never forget the energy of that woman,” … she continued to do everything.””: An excellent quote to me exemplifying the strength and motion aspects associated with “Heaven”.

A heavenly mother: a “god" mother

‘Ms. Sozzani took special care to nurture emerging designers with Vogue’s Who Is On Next? Prize. “She was a godmother to talent everywhere,” Diane von Furstenberg said in an interview.’

‘From her earliest days at Italian Vogue (and before that… Ms. Sozzani nurtured the careers of who would become the most important fashion photographers of a generation…’

“… nurture emerging designers … a godmother to talent everywhere … nurtured the careers … of a generation …”: How did Sozzani manifest this yang energy in a feminine way? Apparently by “nurturing”, not only offspring (she had a son), but the special qualities and skills she saw in others. This point is most relevant. I think Metal energy represents that quality which is unique to each individual, the part that needs to be discovered, developed and brought out into active life; what makes each person special in his/her own way. “… of a generation.”: This part of the quote highlights the way 6 Metal influence can be long lasting, often the creator of templates which others follow.

Metal has weight: gravitas

‘…she addressed herself to serious concerns, too, dedicating photo shoots and special issues to themes too delicate for her international colleagues to touch: drug abuse and rehabilitation; domestic violence; the Gulf oil spill of 2010.’

“… she addressed herself to serious concerns, too, …”: Even though she was editor-in-chief of a fashion magazine, she introduced important social issues not normally found in such publications.

Social networks correspond with Metal

‘… she was known as a social connector nonpareil…’

“... a social connector …’: With metal we can build machines, run on electricity, which enable us to connect with the world. Reid Hoffman (b. 8.5.1967, Palo Alto, CA) who co-founded the business social network sight, LinkedIn, was born in a 6 Metal year, while Mark Zuckerberg (b. 5.14.1984, White Plains, NJ) founder of social network site, Facebook, was born in a 7 Metal year.

Lars Ulrich, 1 Water ☵

(b. 12.26, 1963, Gentofte, Denmark): Danish musician, songwriter, actor, record producer, and co-founder of the American heavy metal band “Metallica”. (Wikipedia)

The Last Word, by Kory Grow, Rolling Stone, November 17, 2016

What did you learn about yourself from watching that movie?

[He is referring to the 2004 documentary on Metallica, entitled “Some Kind Of Monster”. The following quote from the print edition is slightly different from the website one.]

‘… I was proud of the fact that we were completely transparent and let people in. I have an ability to compartmentalize stuff that scares me; the only thing that scares me about myself is that I have the ability of not being scared. Sometime I can be just so thick-skinned that it actually freaks me out. In the wake of my Napster [lawsuit], I took some pretty heavy hits. I just learned to kind of put the turtle shell on and not be affected by any of it.

Water imagery

“… we were completely transparent and let people in. …”: I think Ulrich expressed his innate Water nature in this quote, since the two underlined images can easily apply to Water. The 1 Water I Ching trigram, entitled “Water”, images a river, as does the Chinese character for water. I maintain therefore that a river is the underlying image from which we can derive Water metaphors. With this in mind, we can see below the surface in clear water. It suggests to me, that in a person who can say he/she was completely transparent, we can see behind the front (the darkness of a river from distance), he/she is not hiding anything, we can see such a person’s true nature; genuine and truthful. Let people in? Press your finger into water, and it makes a space: water lets you in, water is accommodating.

Fear corresponds with Water

“… compartmentalize stuff that scares me; the only thing that scares me about myself is that I have the ability of not being scared. …”: In classical Chinese medicine, the emotion of fear corresponds with Water, and so does danger. Fear as an issue arises often in 1 Water people profiles (see Carly Fiorina, Week 32, 2015). Again, in the image of a river, water only moves forward, despite whatever obstacles. Fear by comparison represents a resistance to move forward. To be fearless is to have strong Water energy; it might also suggest a liking for danger and risk taking, and consequently the possibility of harming oneself. To be fearful by contrast, might suggest weak Water, but it might also suggest a wise use of caution. It would appear Ulrich was blessed with strong innate Water energy, although the quote suggests, possibly too strong.

Running water can be soft, and hard

“…so thick-skinned… put the turtle shell on and not be affected by any of it…”: We think of running water as being soft, but if we are hit by it, by a strong wave for example, while surfing, we know it can also be hard. In nature, when the leaves have fallen, and the sky has turned grey and it is cold, winter is upon us, and the environment can appear hard, and indeed the expression on people’s faces can often appear this way. I recommend viewing the movie “Winter’s Bone”, a movie I maintain clearly carries Water energy, to demonstrate this point. So, the hardness of Water which is usually concealed by a gentle exterior, can show itself when the external is challenging. Hardness comes to the surface, which normally remains concealed, as imaged by the strong yang inner line in the trigram for Water, which is surrounded by two yin lines.

Angela Carter, 6 Metal ☰

(5.7.1940, Eastbourne, England – 2.16.1992): English novelist, short story writer, journalist … Ranked by The Times in 2008, tenth in their list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945”. (Wikipedia)

We also learn in her Wikipedia entry that she died of lung cancer. In classical Chinese medicine (CCM for brevity), the lungs correspond with Metal. Most people who died of lung cancer were probably not born in a Metal year, but from my research, it is common to see the person dying from a disease associated with the organ systems related to the Energy of the birth year into which the person was born. With this in mind, whether or not a smoker, it may be that a person born in a Metal year, might be that much more predisposed to lung cancer than those born in one of the other Energy related years.

I have included this profile this week because I think it helps to highlight some of the issues I have mentioned in the profile above, of Franca Sozzani.

Cartergraphy, The Economist, November 12, 2016

This article is a review of a new biography of Carter entitled: “The Invention of Angela Carter: A Biography”, by Edmund Gordon. The use of the word “invention” in the book’s title is notable to me as the 6 Metal I Ching trigram “Heaven”, stands for creativity and the instigation of things, and thus, invention.

Heavenly imagery

‘Readers and critics have tended to pigeonhole Angela Carter, or reshape her in their own image. Undergraduates often reduce the British novelist, whose stories are known for their magical realism and striking female characters, to a mouthpiece of feminism. Tributes when she died in 1992, at just 51, cast her as a “fairy queen”, a “benevolent white witch” and a “fairy godmother”. The novelist loathed being appropriated or misinterpreted; when an editor, believing Carter to be “an Earth mother”, asked her to write about the summer solstice at Stonehenge, she said: “You just haven’t got me, have you dear?”’

“…reshape her in their own image…”: Metal objects can be melted down and re-used in different ways. From my research the prefix “re” is common in the profiles of those born in a Metal year: renew, reinvent, reform, restructure, and reprogram are some common examples. Carter’s Brittanica.com entry again employs the word “reshape” to describe the basis of her approach to fiction:

‘British author who reshaped motifs from mythology, legends, and fairy tales in her books, lending them a ghastly humour and eroticism.’

In the case of many readers of her work, they have “melted” her metal to “reshape” her personally. “…the British novelist, whose stories are known for their magical realism and striking female characters…”: In the image of Metal, magical realism is an interesting image to me because it embraces the two qualities we can associate with Metal. On the one hand, metal objects can have a strong physical presence, on the other, there is something magical about “Heaven”, about the way we can communicate in an invisible way through the skies (“Heaven” / Metal) with our electronic devices.  “Striking female characters”? They are likely to be strong, and special in some way (see below). “…Tributes …. cast her as a “fairy queen”, a “benevolent white witch” and a “fairy godmother”: Fairies, and to some extent witches, are, like angels (“Angela” Carter), mentioned in the obituary of Franca Sozzani, feminine images associated with the sky and heaven. “… when an editor, believing Carter to be “an Earth mother”, asked her to write about the summer solstice at Stonehenge, she said: “You just haven’t got me, have you dear?”: They certainly hadn’t, she was not of the earth, but a woman of the sky; a “Heavenly" mother; a “god” mother.

Worldview

‘Her ego was stung by repeated snubs for the Booker prize, Britain’s biggest award for fiction. She hated being reduced to a “woman writer” ...’

“Her ego was stung …”: As mentioned, the lungs correspond with Metal in CCM, and ego is associated with the lungs. From my research, the connection between ego and Metal is somewhat common in Metal people profiles, especially 6 Metal. “… She hated being reduced to a “woman writer ...”: The image of heaven is of vastness, and of transcending boundaries, in this case, of gender. In addition, it is a yang energy so we can expect her to be strong, perhaps very strong, and able to confront men on their terms.

Special qualities

‘Mr. Gordon is especially strong on the myriad influences on Carter’s writing, all the while noting her uniqueness.’

“… all the while noting her uniqueness ...”: My understanding of Metal is that, in the image of metal being mined, it derives its qualities from being separated from the earth and in the process, of finding itself above it. The Chinese character for Metal is the same for gold. I maintain that in a similar way, our metal, our gold exists within each of us, but it has to be mined; we have to dig deep, find it, and through a long process, refine it, and turn it into that something which makes us special and unique.

Natalie Cole, 5 Soil ☷/☶

(2.6.1950, Los Angeles, CA - 12.31.2015): American singer, songwriter and performer... daughter of Nat King Cole... initially an R&B artist, and then a pop artist...she re-recorded standards by her father resulting in her biggest success, "Unforgettable...with Love", which sold over 7 million copies and also won her numerous Grammy awards...sold over 30 million records worldwide. (Wikipedia)

Natalie Cole, ‘Unforgettable’ Voice and Million-Selling Hitmaker, Dies at 65, by Jon Pareles, The New York Times, January 1, 2016

Fire nourishes Soil

'Yet it was with “Unforgettable...With Love” in 1991, leaping back to a previous generation’s songs, that Ms. Cole would establish her latter-day career...Ms. Cole’s new direction continued to yield both hits and awards...Her 1993 album, “Take a Look” and a 1994 Christmas album, “Holly & Ivy,” both sold half a million copies; “Stardust,” another collection of standards in 1996, eventually sold a million copies and brought her a Grammy for another duet with her father, “When I Fall in Love.” Her 2008 album, “Still Unforgettable,” was named Best Traditional Pop Album...And the virtual duets with her father continued through “Natalie Cole en Español.”

According to Wikipedia, the music album “Unforgettable ... with Love”, focuses on covers of standards previously performed by her father, famous popular singer from the '50's, Nat "King" Cole (3.17.1919, Montgomery, AL - 2.15.1965). The song “Unforgettable” was an engineered, virtual duet, she sang with him.

“… leaping back to a previous generation’s songs …”: The Energetic relationship with her father is important. Nat was born in a 9 Fire year, and in this system Fire nourishes Soil (ashes return nutrients to the soil, the sun enables things to grow in the soil), meaning that energetically, he supported her, his energy flowed easily to her; they could easily have a good connection, their voices could probably harmonize well. I think it can also suggest that in times of need, she could fall back on him; he was always there for her.

Soil doesn’t move much

“… another collection of standards … Best Traditional Pop Album…”: The second point worth noting concerns this word “standards”. To explain, we first need to know a little more of where 5 Soil fits into the scheme of things. Basically, Soil occupies the center in Five Transformations theory, and in the magic square in Nine Star Ki, 5 Soil occupies the center. Soil occupies this position because it provides the solid base upon which we can carry out our lives, and the food we need to exist. The center therefore, represents values and experiences that stand the test of time, and thus traditions, rituals, and recurring annual events, handed down from generation to generation. The geometric shape representing Soil in classical Chinese medicine and philosophy (CCMP for brevity) is the square, and thus we can see inklings of that which is square and old fashioned in Soil. Concerning music, it could mean “standards”. In his later years, Rod Stewart (b. 1.10.1945, London, England), who was born in a 2 Soil year, has recorded a number of albums of American standards (The Great American Songbook, Vols. 1 – 5).

Patrick Soong-Shiong, 3 Tree ☳

(b. 7.29.1952, Port Elizabeth, South Africa): Surgeon, medical researcher at UCLA, businessman and philanthropist. (Wikipedia)

Who's the richest guy in Los Angeles? by David Whitford, Fortune, December 9, 2013

This profile of Soong-Shiong is significant to me as it shows aspects of his nature that we often see in 3 Tree people.

A plant breaks through the earth and into the light

'Never heard of him? Many people haven't. Until recently his reputation was strictly professional -- as a pioneering transplant surgeon at UCLA in the 1980s.'

“… a pioneering transplant surgeon at UCLA in the 1980s …”: First, 3 Tree energy corresponds with the time when a plant first breaks through the earth and into the light. It is a “beginning” energy, the energy of pioneers. A tree can also be “transplanted”, so we might consider some kind of connection here with his Tree energy, but perhaps not. Christiaan Barnard, (11.8.1922, Cape Province, South Africa – 9.2.2001[Wikipedia]), responsible for the first successful human to human heart transplant, a major event at the time, was born in a 6 Metal year, an energy that could easily imply a connection with cutting; with surgery. Moreover, metal cuts wood; it is with a metal implement that roots are cut and the tree removed. [Interestingly, in terms of what I have said regarding the relationship between the lungs and 6 Metal in Angela Carter’s profile, according to Wikipedia, Barnard died from a severe asthma attack]

A tree's branches extend outwards

'Soon-Shiong already has a plan to save the world. The next "arc of my career" is how he sometimes describes it; at other times he calls it his lifelong "mission."'

"... a plan to save the world... his lifelong "mission.": For me this quote describes three images that are classic Tree. Planning corresponds with the function of the Tree related organ, the liver in classical Chinese medicine. I think we can see the correspondence when we see how a tree grows toward and responds to light. In this image, the plan corresponds with the light. A tree's branches extend outwards. I maintain that in this image we see an extension of energy outward. In the image of limbs, it implies to me, “helping hands”. Rescuing, saving, of being involved in causes, of being on a mission or crusade, are common themes in Tree people profiles.

A tree grows toward light: vision

"His ability to envision exceeds sometimes the capacity of language and visual representation to express,"

'What sets Soon-Shiong apart is the sheer scale of his undertaking. "He has a vision for stitching together all the parts of health care that are disparate today," says David Rose, a product designer affiliated with MIT's Media Lab who sold Soon-Shiong one tiny part of that vision ... "It's a pretty sweeping and bold and ambitious vision.'

“… envisionvisual representation … He has a vision … sweeping and bold and ambitious vision.”: According to classical Chinese medicine, the eyes, and thus potentially, vision issues, corresponds with the liver, and the liver in turn corresponds with Tree. Vision issues might imply physical problems with the eyes, but it could also have a connection with one’s imagination and one’s ability to visualize; the ability to plan and strategize also correspond with the liver in CCM. In this way, to me, Soong-Shiong is naturally expressing his innate Tree energy. Bigness is another issue. In Western astrology, he was born in the Fire sign of Leo. A fire can become huge. In addition to his strong Tree nature, his strong Fire nature stimulates him to envision big.

Mikhail Kalashnikov, 9 Fire ☲

(11.19.1919, Kurya, Altai Krai, Russian SFSR – 12.23.2013): small arms designer, Russian lieutenant general, designer of the AK-47, and AK74. (Wikipedia)

The reason for his fame helps to confirm a relationship between Fire energy, and violence or war, for he is the inventor of the AK-47 semi-automatic and automatic assault rifle (Auto, Kalashnikov, 1947, the year this rifle was invented). As I have mentioned often, “bigness” corresponds with Fire; a fire can become huge, and we see it in many ways, in the profiles of those born in a 9 Fire year. Also known as the Kalashnikov, it is the most popular assault weapon. According to Wikipedia.com, there are over 100 million Kalashnikovs in circulation. Not surprisingly, he has been twice named “Hero of Socialist Labor” in Russia, the “hero’” being another classic Fire related image, since a fire rises to a peak, the highest expression of energy in the Five Transformations system. His other claim to fame is as the manufacturer of “Kalashnikov” vodka, 41 percent alcohol that is sold in a rifle-shaped glass bottle. Vodka, as a spirit, also corresponds with Fire.

Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, 3 Tree ☳

(8.22.1934, Trenton, NJ – 12.27.2012): United States Army general. As Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Central Command, he led all coalition forces in the Persian Gulf War in 1991. (Wikipedia)

Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, U.S. Commander in Gulf War, Dies at 78, by Robert D. McFadden, The New York Times, 12/27/2012

'Schwarzkopf....commanded the American-led forces that crushed Iraq in the 1991 Persian Gulf war and became the nation’s most acclaimed military hero since the midcentury exploits of Generals Dwight D. Eisenhower and Douglas MacArthur....'

The 3 Tree I Ching trigram is called “Thunder”. It images a yang line rising below two yin lines. In his translation, "The Authentic I Ching", Henry Wei describes it thus: "a strong, dynamic force moving up from under the earth and about to burst through its surface." This trigram symbolizes quick, rapid, "shocking" energy. It corresponds with early spring, when a plant first breaks through the earth and into light. We should also note the organ that corresponds with Tree in classical Chinese medicine, the liver, in being likened to an official government post, is entitled "The General". Some prominent American generals were born in a Tree year: Douglas MacArthur, 4 Tree (1.26.1880, Little Rock, AK – 4.5.1964), George C. Marshall, 3 Tree (12.31.1880, Uniontown, PA – 10.16.1959), Curtis LeMay, 4 Tree (11.15.1906, Columbus, OH – 10.1.1990), Eric Shinseki, 4 Tree (b.11.28.1942, Lihue, HI), Martin Dempsey, 3 Tree (b. 3.14.1952, Jersey City, NJ), and David Petraeus, 3 Tree (11.7.1952, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY).

While his defeat of the Iraqis’ in Kuwait, was to many not as great a victory as was maintained, due to the imbalance of the size of the allied army versus the Iraqis’, as well as other factors, it would appear that his approach to gaining victory demonstrated this burst of energy described by "Thunder". According to "In the Eye of the Storm: The Life of General H. Norman Schwarzkopf”, by Roger Cohen and Claudio Gatti:

“His swift triumph over Iraq in the 1991 gulf war came as a shock to a nation that had been battered, by failing industries and festering economic problems, into a sense that the century of its power was at an end,” they wrote. “Schwarzkopf appeared abruptly as an intensely human messenger of hope, however illusory or fragile.”

And also:

'The ground war was over in a few days, thanks to what he called his “left hook” strategy, in which he placed forces behind enemy lines for a swift, decisive strike.'

The boxing metaphor is interesting. The action of a boxer whose major movements occur in the upper body, resembles the image of a tree with its branches extending outward, while its trunk remains fixed, suggesting that as a sport, boxing corresponds with Tree. Classical Chinese medicine states that "all decisions are made in the gallbladder", the partner organ to the liver which corresponds with Tree. Rather than remaining in the public eye after this event, he soon retired, and after the publication of books on him in the early 90's, not much was heard from him, again suggesting that 3 Tree energy has its major impact in the beginning of things.

Tony Grieg, 9 Fire ☲

(10.10.1946, Queenstown, South Africa – 12.29.2012): English Test cricket captain, turned commentator. Death from cardiac arrest due to apparent heart attack. (Wikipedia)

Energetically his death is significant, as I maintain that since the heart corresponds with Fire, those born in a 9 Fire year may be more prone to heart disease and circulatory disorders, than those born in any other Energetic year. Grieg is another example in addition to those I have already mentioned (see Week 4, 2013).

Sean Parker, 3 Tree ☳

(b. 12.3.1979, Herndon, VA): arrested at age 16 for hacking into Fortune 500 companies; co-founded file-sharing service Napster in 1999, first president of Facebook.

In Nine Star Ki, two numbers correspond with Tree: 3 and 4. The overriding image of Tree, of rising energy, exists in both, but each number concerns a different part of the process. 3 Tree imagery concerns the initial stages; of a tree as a young plant, breaking through the earth and seeing the light of day for the first time, of things getting going. 4 Tree images relate with the overall growth of a tree. Parker's profile is especially helpful in demonstrating the former.

The 3 Tree I Ching trigram is called "Thunder". It is comprised of an unbroken horizontal line, yang, rising below two broken lines, yin. The yin lines, correspond with the stillness of earth, while the yang line, introduces movement. Early spring corresponds with this energy, when nature begins a new cycle. In daily life, the earth can provide stability and security, but these qualities can transform into complacency, inertia, laziness, being in a rut, feeling stuck, and taking things for granted, all images of lack of movement, all things we can see in the person with negative Soil energy. The introduction of the yang line is mirrored in nature by the sound of thunder, heralding the advent of spring. It comes as a shock, and has the energy of disruption; it can awaken and refresh.

Profiles of those born in a 3 Tree year demonstrate that this energy is strongest and most effective in the beginning or early stages of things, or at an early age, or in things that deal with youth, or in maintaining a youthful outlook even in senior years. In terms of popular culture, the classic symbol of this energy was Elvis Presley (1.8.1935, Tupelo, MS – 8.16.’77), "the King", who was the most popular figure at the birth of rock and roll, heralding the introduction of loud ("thunder") music. Following him, other figures in popular music brought music and image, that came at the time as a kind of shock: Mick Jagger (b. 7.26.1943, Dartford, Kent, England) and Keith Richards (b. 12.8.1943, Dartford, Kent, England) of the Rolling Stones; George Harrison (2.25.1943, Liverpool, England – 11.29.2001), who introduced Eastern religion and music to a massive Western audience; and the extraordinary guitar work of Jimmy Page (b. 1.9.1944, Heston, Middlesex, England) of Led Zeppelin. More recently we see this energy in Paul Allen (b. 1.21.1953, Seattle, WA) who co-founded Microsoft, and was responsible for much of the original software design, but left due to sickness early on in the history of the company. President Obama (b. 8.4.1961, Honolulu, HI), in addition to becoming the first African-American president, brought something fresh in his approach, and in seeking his first term as president attracted a large youth vote. There is also activist and author of "The Shock Doctrine", Naomi Klein (b. 5.8.1970, Montreal, Quebec, Canada), and courageous young girl, Malala Yousafzai (b. 7.12.1997, Mingora, Swat, Pakistan), who was shot by the Taliban for taking a stand about education for girls in Pakistan.

So who is Sean Parker?

With a Little Help From His Friends, by David Kirkpatrick, Vanity Fair, October 2010

'Within a few short years, Parker went from apprehended 16-year-old hacker—he had managed to break into the computer networks of numerous multi-national corporations and even military databases—to world-class Internet entrepreneur. In 1999 he became rather notorious, at 19, for helping an even younger teenager named Shawn Fanning create Napster. That free song-sharing service upended the music industry. More recently, Parker played an indispensable role as the founding president of Facebook, the mammoth social-networking site where 500 million people now spend 700 billion minutes a month. Had he not joined founder Mark Zuckerberg in Palo Alto in the summer of 2004, when the fledgling Facebook was just five months old, the service almost certainly would not be the colossus it is today.'

The relationship between Parker and Zuckerberg is significant energetically speaking. From my research, when we look at what is known as the magic square in Nine Star Ki, when a number is in the center, the numbers directly above it and below it are the ones that are most likely to connect easily with the central number when talking about people's birth dates. Zuckerberg was born in a 7 Metal year (b. 5.14.1984, White Plains, NY). When 7 is in the center, the numbers 2 and 3 are above and below it respectively. I maintain that a person born in a 7 Metal year is going to find that his/her energy best complements those born in a 2 Soil, or 3 Tree year. On the other hand, when 3 is in the center, 7 and 8 are above and below it respectively; thus people with these numbers are the ones most likely to complement 3 Tree. Thus, energetically speaking, according to this idea, there is a good energy flow between Parker and Zuckerberg. This profile also tells us that one of Parker's closest friends is Sean Lennon; also born in a 7 Metal year (b. 10.9.1975, NYC). In Zuckerberg's case it was most auspicious. While his energy is particularly suited to social networking, but not so much to business, Parker's, as we have seen excels in beginning things, in startups. Put them both together and you have Facebook as it exists today.

A tree grows toward the light

'Parker had already concluded that the most promising way to launch a social network would be within a relatively closed community. College seemed perfect. He trawled the Web site and sent an e-mail to the kid who ran it—Mark Zuckerberg, then a sophomore at Harvard—suggesting that the two of them meet ... Matt Cohler, who joined Thefacebook shortly after Parker, is awed when he thinks about that pivotal e-mail. “Napster and Facebook are two of the most significant companies in the history of the Internet,” he says, “and in both cases Parker spotted them earlier than anyone—other than the people who invented them.”'

'Back then Parker apparently believed even more passionately in the company’s potential than did Zuckerberg himself. Peter Thiel—the billionaire hedge-fund manager and co-founder of PayPal, who became Thefacebook’s first investor—says that around that time “Sean consistently argued that Facebook was going to be really big. If Mark ever had any second thoughts, Sean was the one who cut that off.”

The important part of the first quote is in the last sentence. In his translation of the I Ching, "The Authentic I Ching", Henry Wei describes the Thunder trigram thus: "a strong, dynamic force moving up from under the earth and about to burst through its surface." The important issue is that the plant is at the stage when it is first to see the light, and in terms of a person, the light is the idea, the image, the vision. Secondly, Wei's quote includes this word "burst"; the plant is full of energy that it cannot contain, and that cannot be contained. Earth, which doesn't move much, represents as mentioned in the beginning of this profile, negatively speaking, the status quo, and a situation lacking change. In this sense, 3 Tree energy can be a disruptive energy. Parker and his friends tell us what this energy means in Parker's case:

“I think the best way to describe me is as an archetypal Loki character,” Parker begins, “like Joseph Campbell’s Hero with a Thousand Faces. I’m like the prankster or Puck in mythology. He’s not trying to cause harm, but rather to pull back the veil that masks your conventional, collectively reinforced understanding of society. This renegade thing was very clear at Napster. The point was that the emperor—the content industry—had no clothes.” He hesitates. “This all probably sounds incredibly pretentious and narcissistic.” ... It does. But even as Parker alternates between putting himself down and pumping himself up, he can rely on most of his friends to speak glowingly. Says Peter Thiel, ... Sean is one of the great serial entrepreneurs of his generation, someone who is really changing the world and turning the wheel of history.”

'It is late at night. Parker stretches back on an easy chair and bemoans what he sees as the scarcity, in contemporary culture, of revolutionary thinkers on the level of, say, Jim Morrison [12.8.1943, Melbourne, FL), also 3 Tree and Jack Kerouac “They were capable of folly,” he says, “and willing to take risks in terms of their message. We live in an extremely repressive era, and we fail to realize how repressive it is, because we’re told that all these outlets for rebellion, like listening to rock music, are no longer satanic. Smoking weed—that’s sort of O.K. and acceptable in some circles.” To Parker, the implication is that people in his position have almost an obligation to do what they can with the tools at their disposal—software and the Internet—to free up society through disruptive technology. As he muses, it is clear that he sees entrepreneurship and invention as handmaidens of social transformation.'

'Most of all, he turns his knowledge and instincts toward Internet business strategy as a way, he says, of “re-architecting society. It’s technology, not business or government, that’s the real driving force behind large-scale societal shifts.”'

At limb's length

'This is Parker’s pattern—great idea, work like the devil, then disappear for a while.”

As I see it, a tree's limbs have a dual meaning in terms of the way people born in a Tree year manifest their energy. On the one hand, they reach out, and in some way help others. As I have mentioned often, they tend to get involved in causes, and indeed, in Parker's case, he has a Facebook application that is indeed called "Causes". On the other hand, elusiveness is a common theme in those born in a Tree year. They need their space, and may periodically keep people at a distance.

Sean Parker: Agent Of Disruption, by Steven Bertoni, Forbes, 9/21/2011

‘For all that he has accomplished, Parker remains a hacker at heart, motivated less by money than the drive to disrupt.’

There is a similar image in the hacker in his/her actions, to the plant breaking through the earth and into the light; one is in the dark, and then, in breaking through, there is this light, this expanse of knowledge at one's disposal.

There are a number of quotes in this profile, that I think simply reinforce the ideas presented in the previous profile:

Flighty, manic and unpredictable, Parker grates on investors—he’s been jettisoned from the three companies he helped create, soon after they lifted off. “He’s seen as an unknown quantity, and VCs love for things to be very much in control,” says Facebook cofounder Dustin Moskovitz. But VCs also love big ideas, and Parker has those in spades— LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman calls him a “big-ass visionary.”

In this quote we see how 3 Tree energy is especially helpful in initiating things, but not necessarily in going further than that. Big-ass visionary? – a tree grows toward the light; we can expect that a Tree nature person is likely to have a good imagination, and the ability to visualize.

“He can see things most people won’t be able to see for a year or two,” says Palihapitiya. As Shervin Pishevar of Menlo Ventures describes it: “Parker has access to trends and signals that are invisible to many people. For him it’s like hearing a dog whistle.” Parker doesn’t disagree: “I find a lot of things relevant that aren’t necessarily relevant to the world when I’m thinking about them.”

'Plaxo was Parker’s first attempt at creating a real company—an online service that aimed to keep your address book up to date. It sounds boring compared to Napster and Facebook, but Plaxo was an early social networking tool and a pioneer of the types of viral tricks that helped grow LinkedIn, Zynga and Facebook. “Plaxo is like the indie band that the public doesn’t know but was really influential with other musicians,” Parker says … Once you downloaded Plaxo, the program would mine your address book and e-mail every contact with a message, coaxing them to sign up for the service. When the next person signed up, the software would pirate the new address book and spread further. Within a short time millions of e-mail accounts had been hit with Plaxo pitches. “In some ways Plaxo is the company I’m most proud of because it was the company that wreaked the most havoc on the world,” says Parker. Those experiences later changed the history of Facebook.'

Two comments on this last quote. First, another aspect of this extension of the limbs, apart from helping others, is in the pitch; it is a good energy for reaching out and doing business. Secondly, we can see in the way that Plaxo worked, something like the branching aspect of a tree where one branch leads to multiple branches, and each one repeats the same pattern.
